Johnny Temple: The Indie Philosophy of Akashic's Rock-'n'-Roll Publisher

PUNK ROCK PUBLISHING! DIY!!!

Johnny Temple: The Indie Philosophy of Akashic's Rock-'n'-Roll Publisher:
"Contrary to the prevailing spirit, I find this an exhilarating time to publish books. Never before has the business been so accessible to those lacking wealthy backers or a trust fund. Affordable publishing software, print-on-demand technology and other new developments are wedging the industry door open to a less gentrified crop of publishers, authors and editors. The creativity and vitality of punk and other underground/outsider art scenes is increasingly visible across the indie publishing spectrum, from stalwarts like Soft Skull and AK Press to newer companies like Two Dollar Radio, Ig, Void Books, Ugly Duckling Presse, and crime-fiction visionaries Ugly Town"

AMERICAblog: Because a great nation deserves the truth

How can Blair continue to stand with these morons?

AMERICAblog: Because a great nation deserves the truth:

"ABC News just reported that the British authorities say they have evidence that the London attacks last week were an operation planned by Al Qaeda for the last two years. This was an operation the Brits thought they caught and stopped in time, but they were wrong. The piece of the puzzle ABC missed is that this is an operation the Bush administration helped botch last year."

Stay Free! Daily: I'd like to teach the world to sing ... for mercy:

"Despite severe water shortages in India, Coke continues to soak up 500,000 liters a day there to make its sugary beverage. Adland notes notes that it takes roughly seven times as much water to create one bottle of Coke. "

It's the real bad thing.

The Washington Monthly

I'm sure yr getting all yr Rove news and outrage elsewhere
(or everywhere as the case may be), but I thought this was a nice summation.

The Washington Monthly:

"When you cut through the crap, this case is simple: a couple of political officials in the Bush White House decided to deliberately and systematically release the name of a covert CIA operative to the press solely in order to score some minor debating points against her husband, a man who had recently embarrassed them in the pages of the New York Times. The rest is just fluff. Either you're outraged by such a casual attitude toward national security or you aren't."

Burnt Orange Report - Current Coalition to Defeat Texas Same-Sex Marriage Amendment

"This isn't an amendment for the homosexuals to fight; it's one for all reasonable people to fight (progressive to conservative) if they believe that making Civil Marriage in Texas double secret illegal is hardly necessary to the function of the state."

Canadian Cynic: Just how annoying can Christians get? - who polices the police? Christian edition!

Canadian Cynic: Just how annoying can Christians get?:

"United States: A South Carolina Druid couple have filed a complaint against a police officer who used a traffic stop as an excuse to try and convert them to Christianity."

Only ran across this because I was clicking next blog up at the top of the blogger bar over and over at the end of the day...
sure it's not a crime lab scandal, or beating a fellow officer about the head, but it is an abuse of power...

Maybe I should start witnessing for secular humanism whenever I return the call of someone looking to replace their router...

TPMCafe || Politics, Ideas & Lots Of Caffeine

This is the woman Rove declared "fair game".

TPMCafe || Politics, Ideas & Lots Of Caffeine:

"A few of my classmates, and Valerie was one of these, became a non-official cover officer. That meant she agreed to operate overseas without the protection of a diplomatic passport. If caught in that status she would have been executed. "

dialogue

A: You know what I think? I think people are hollow, no,
I mean transparent.
I'm a empiricist.
I think if a person does something stupid,
then the truth of the matter is,
they are stupid.

B: Now hold on. Been lots of smart folks done stupid things.

A: Name one.

B: Oedipus.

A: Oedipus?

B: Yeah, well he put his own eyes out.
That's pretty stupid.

A: You think that's the stupidest thing Oedipus done?

(pause)

And what did he ever do to make you think he was so all-fired smart anyway?

B: O.k. Bad example.

A: I thought so.

B: Well, what about Jesus?

A: What about Jesus?

B: Well, you gotta admit he was a smart fella.

A: Sure, I mean he didn't understand how people ARE,
but I reckon he did understand some things.

B: And he went and got hisself nailed to a cross.
That's pretty stupid.

A: Well, the story is, God told him to.

B: Look, just cause God wants you to do something don't mean it's the smart thing to do...
I mean, you and I both know, if God was running things, he'd probably have me turn myself in.

Don’t forget we put poor Sid in the ground this
Friday! Sad and depressing, yes, but also a laugh riot!

SID ON ICE
A special benefit wake in honor of the deceased.

It’s time for the annual Bobbindoctrin benefit!
This year, we’ll be interring poor hapless Sid of Danse Macabre Part
I: The Constant Companion. For one low ticket price, you’ll
enjoy wonderful covered dishes from local volunteer kitchens, plenty to
drink, and some of the finest music Houston has to offer! Later in the
evening, as you’ve begun to cope with the loss, Bobbindoctrin pastor
Greg Dean will deliver a eulogy that will pay adequate tribute to the
small void of a man we knew Sid to be. Please join us for an evening of
disgusted remembrance as we say a fond farewell to Sid’s paunchy
carcass.

neomarxisme: Sampling 2005

neomarxisme: Sampling 2005:
"In related news, I just got the new Go! Team CD single 'Bottle Rocket' from Vroom Records, and they have apparently had to clean up their sample usage for a U.S. release. (Although using 'Soul Time' by Shirley Ellis seems to be strangely decriminalized.) The new versions still retain the same flavor, but a lot of the old incidental samples are gone and were not replaced with soundalikes. "

The long arm of copyright keeps getting longer...
commerce and law replace folk traditions of appropriation...
"it protects the artist"
but what does it do to the art?
WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE ART?

The Huffington Post | The Blog

The Huffington Post | The Blog:

"The report suggets that Saudi Arabia, which reputedly has been trying to go nuclear since 1975 (!!), has purchased nuclear materials from our other close friend, Pakistan (the father of whose bomb, A.Q. Khan, has previously been revealed to have sold nuclear goodies to North Korea, Iran, and Libya, among other good citizens of the world). The report also indicates that said Saud kingdom also paid a certain Middle East figure to develop a nuclear capability -- none other than Saddam Hussein. "

uhm, maybe Harry's right...
maybe someone should look into this?

Couldn't the shrub just call Bandar Bush and ask him, "What's up?"

we make money not art: A tele-tactic game of submission and fun

Just in case you needed to be reminded that people are bad...

we make money not art: A tele-tactic game of submission and fun

"In a civilized society, civilized individuals would not engage in "primitive," violent, behavior. As such, it would make little sense that anyone would want to play, let alone, invent a game such as Taser Tag. Fortunately, we do not live in a so-called civilized society."

Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company Presents:

Hotel Pasiphae

By John Harvey

Houston, TX-

A mother remembers her husband sitting in a dark cave, her affair with a bull, the children she abandons to horrible fates. Mildred's Umbrella presents an unusual evening of theater as Michelle Edwards becomes Pasiphae, wife of King Minos, mother of the Minotaur, in John Harvey's new one-act play Hotel Pasiphae. Directed by Patricia Duran and featuring video by Eric Doss, Hotel Pasiphae reinvents Greek mythology through the memories of a woman unable to forget what she has done and who has been harmed. Hotel Pasiphae runs July 21, 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8pm and Sunday, July 24 at 3pm. The show will be performed at Gremillion and Co. Gallery, 2501 Sunset Blvd, 77005.

Lying Media Bastards Media Economics:

"...a grand total of 118 people control what you see and hear in the media every day. And those 118 people sit on the boards of 288 corporations. "

not what I see actually...
haven't watched any kind of TV news in I don't know how long (o.k. occasionally The Daily Show)...
I get all my news online at Kos, Eschaton, etc...
I've chosen my own filters,
and I suggest you do the same.

James Wolcott: Oliver Stone and Steven Spielberg: The Doublemint Twins of Treason

It's the talk of the blogosphere:
James Wolcott: Oliver Stone and Steven Spielberg: The Doublemint Twins of Treason

am I the only liberal that thinks Stone is a hack? a skilled hack perhaps...
but a hack nonetheless...
Sure, I cried during "born on the 4th of july" and then I left the theatre mad at the filmmaker and they way he manipulated me...
maybe that's his job, maybe not...but it pissed me off.
I prefer my art with a little more ambiguity...
and don't get me started on "Wall Street"...
You know if you make an anti-greed film and I hate it,
it must be bad.
anyway, just wanted to throw that out there...

Henry Rollins - A conservative?

Via Atrios:

Not a huge fan of Henry, but righteous to the point of self-righteous is still righteous,
and the man is righteous...

"Jane. I don't know if I could be called a conservative seeing how I will get up extra early to tell anyone in front of me THAT BUSH IS A COWARD AND A LIAR AND THOSE WHO VOTED FOR HIM ARE PART OF A VERY BAD PROBLEM. THAT THE FOX NEWS CHANNEL IS A BUNCH OF SISSIES WHO CAN'T TAKE A PUNCH...."

damn...

you missed a good show Friday...

The guys from New Orleans were pretty cool...
(the narrative of the laptop piece disrupted the music for me a little much,
but there was a lot of potential) and One Man Machine played some
cool songs based on bass loops, etc...
then Charlie did a very cool solo set - Kelly cello stick against
two droning strings (ebow on electric guitar) run through effects...
good stuff...
Then we did an LB set...due to technical complications it wasn't what
we had planned at all really, but it went well enough we're talking about
playing out again before two years pass...
And then John Cramer brought the rock...
and you missed it...

Saturday - got up early and went to an audition for Mildred's Umbrella...
then rushed to t10 rehearsal...
Later than night went to the Starr Project "Rock Star" party for a bit...
shaved down to a fu manchu, put on a long black wig, and my leather jacket
and headed out there...
had some bad punch, and hung with some of my band members for a while...
we are playing Saturday night, and it should be, uh interesting....
Then I went and hung out with Joe Mathlete, Gie Gie, and Charles Mathlete
and some folks over at Charlotte's house...
we filmed a Christian Rock video "Christian Rock Band meets the Devil"
watch for it!

yesterday - t10 - TDU strategerizing (we're now on HIGH ATE US till August),
and then mathletes practice (we're playing Friday at the Bobbindoctrin benefit! WHOOHOOO!)...

today - shaved off the fu manchu - it just looked too silly. I couldn't look in the mirror without giggling...and now I'm at work...
whoohooo!

so, back to it...
