a play and some bands...chances to see me - aren't you excited?
This weekend "By The Bog of Cats" opens...
and both The Mathletes and The Defenestration Unit will be playing...
TDU is on the Amnesty Int. Benefit gig at Last Concert... (http://www.lastconcert.com/))
so far nobody has been able to tell us when we're playing...
it'll be sometime Saturday...
(from looking at the website it seems like we'll be pretty late - after the play at least,
right before free radicals! YAY!)
The Mathletes are playing Friday night at Helios...
We'll be playing with Two Star Symphony and Landfall...
This is gonna be a fun show, and the debut of the latest mathletes lineup...

Rita?
we lost power for a little while sometime after 3am...
it was back on by the time my roommate got up around 8am...
I only know we lost it cause my fridge was less than freezing this morning,
and my TV was off...
a few limbs in the yard, but no real damage anywhere that I can see...
Now if I can just find somewhere to eat lunch...
haha...
pretty sure everything is closed still,
although there's really no reason anyplace
that has power shouldn't be rocking and rolling
at this point...

we still don't know what exactly is going to happen here...
the "official" pronouncement is that Rita'll hit closer to the LA/TX border,
but Dr. Neil is still talking about a possible
direct hit to Galveston.
We should start seeing rain and tropical storm level winds in the next few hours...
I know several people who tried to leave yesterday only to turn around...
those who did get out spent a lot of time in their cars...
stories of crossing 3 miles in 4 hours or 6 miles in 45 minutes...
One friend nearly passed out in her car,
got rearended, eventually pulled over,
got herself and her 4 cats cooled down,
and drank some ice water provided by a friendly local merchant,
and then turned around and went home.
Another left last night (talked to her as I was biking to Rudyard's...
bars are the only things open...Rudz, Poison Girl, #"s, and Notsuoh were up and running last night...) She said there was no traffic all the way to intercontinental and she wasn't worried. Talked to her later - when she hit 1960 it came to a DEAD standstill, and after an hour or so of that, she turned around and came home.
Lots of folks I know are staying, and most of them were at Rudyard's drinking last night...
I've got some neighbors I know across the street, and down the street that are riding it out here in the neighborhood.

got my canned goods and my candles...
ahhh, good times.

I just shaved off my goatee and my SIDEBURNS!!!
I'm in rehearsals for the next Mildred's Umbrella show
and the director wanted me to get rid of my facial hair...
I could've waited but I figured I'd let the rest of the cast
get used to seeing me as I would look in the show...
I shave off the goatee/beard a couple of times a year usually,
but I can not, literally can not remember the last time I didn't
have sideburns...
this feels very weird...
hmm...
Go see The Rx Medicine Show at Cosmo's on Thursdays...
Same great music you can hear at Helios on Mondays
without all the smoke and sweaty young people...
just in case you have something against sweaty young people.
I went last Thursday and had a great time.

Berlin's a pretty tolerant town, but whenever I wear my white Moroccan robe (and the weather this week has been Moroccan in Berlin) I get the strangest reactions. Something doesn't compute. The wild looks you see here all tend to follow fairly rigid patterns. The industrial goths wear long black leather skirts, for instance, but you can always tell what tribe they're part of. But a white man dressed as a Muslim... what tribe is that? Whose side is he on? What's he playing at? Is this the start of some trend we'd have to call something like "Fashion Muslim"?
While I'm much more of a "nothing's gonna change my clothes ever anymore" kinda guy now I still appreciate fashion freaks...
Back in Jr. High I was all about Hawaiian shirts, and then in High School I was some silly new wave/goth/punk/poseur...
Sophomore year I was easily they gayest little straight boy.
Hair permed in the front.
A broach.
Polo shirt.
Trench coat.
Beatle boots.
Plaid pants.
Now I'm mostly a jeans and t-shirt guy.
Cowboy boots.
Occasionally Overalls...
although a nice white robe does sound comfy.

First of all, many thanks to the kind and courageous folks currently staffing Outpost Crystal. Their compassion and honesty are unparalleled.
I am writing this to describe a horrific situation in NOLA that few are aware of, and those who are aware are doing little or nothing. As many of you have likely observed, the national media outlets are suggesting that hurricane relief is finally leading to vast improvements with each hour that passes. Food and water are being delivered, power restored, levees repaired, water drainage plans developed, and those still living successfully evacuated. Many are reporting that the final areas are being checked for survivors, as well as those who have passed at the hands of Katrina (and more often, neglect). Unfortunately, this is not the case. As demonstrated on nola.com's blog section, many individuals know the exact locations and WORKING telephone numbers of family members, most of whom are elderly, sickly, starving, and in serious need of medical attention. When able to get through on emergency telephone numbers, a feat not to be taken lightly, they are dismissed or told that dispatch would be sent immediately, yet no one has come, even though calls have been placed for days. Many do not require full evacuation, but basic medical attention and/or supplies. Many are completely immobile, and unable to access the limited relief sites or food drops. I spoke to one such individual, Ms. Lee Livermore, who was still trapped in her home earlier this evening (around 6:00pm EST).
Her nephew, living in Michigan, explained to me that she is diabetic, has difficulty moving, and he has been in contact with the coast guard, emergency services, and even the governor's office, yet nothing is being done. Stranded on a 3rd floor apartment, with little food, no sweets, and low blood sugar, her outlook is not promising. This is just one case out of hundreds, probably thousands. Incredibly, much of this information is available through nola.com, a resource many of the media are utilizing, yet remains unreported. The television broadcasts refer to none of this, simply stressing the importance of financial contributions, encouraging National Guard membership for potential volunteers, and emphasizing the positive direction the situation is headed.

so, what have I been up to?

ok...i was about to type that I had set my alarm for noon today,
and I didn't know why, when I remembered why...
hopped in the shower, grabbed my leftover Star Pizza outta the fridge, stopped got a red bull and a bottled water and rushed to rehearsal...
of course it turns out we're not running the act I'm in,
that I'm just there to work with the vocal coach,
which takes all of say 2 minutes,
and now I'm back home, and won't be able to get a nap in cause I had a damned red bull...
so whoohoo!

Beloved punk icon Randy "Biscuit" Turner was found dead in his home Thursday afternoon, the same day a feature story about him appeared in the The Austin Chronicle.
Marc Savlov, a Chronicle reporter who wrote the cover story about Turner, told a group of neighbors who stood outside of Turner's South Austin home that he was the person who went to house, looked inside and called police. "I opened the door, and it was dead silent," he said, his hand shaking as he held his cell phone. He said he had just come from giving a statement to police.
Police investigators at the scene did not release details about Turner's death Thursday night. Investigators from the Travis County medical examiner's office did not return calls. Kevin Buchman, an Austin police spokesman, would not confirm the identity of the body Thursday night. He said it was not being considered a suspicious death.
Nationally, Turner was best known as the frontman for punk-funk pioneers the Big Boys. With the Big Boys, Turner subverted the rapidly entrenching dogmas of American hardcore punk in the late 1970s and early '80s with humor, eclectic songwriting and outrageous costumes.
With guitarist Tim Kerr, bassist Chris Gates and drummer Rey Washam, the Big Boys, which lasted from 1978 to 1984, became known for explosive and funky live shows. They slowed down punk tempos to allow for syncopated rhythms and played with nonpunk bands such as the Washington, D.C., go-go act Trouble Funk. The Big Boys can be seen as a direct precursor to funky rock acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone. The band's encouragement of audience participation made them iconic punk rockers.
"It's hard to overstate how huge they were in Austin," Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey said Thursday evening. "They weren't just a punk band. A really wide spectrum of people would check out the shows. It was due in a large part to Biscuit. Everyone in the crowd would be dancing and having so much fun, and Biscuit was like the ringleader of this band that would sometimes have a full horn section on stage. The band's motto was 'fun, fun, fun,' and that was Biscuit to a T.
"People like Biscuit created an amazing community here," Coffey continued. "The Big Boys were the heart and soul of it, and he was the heart and soul of the Big Boys. He meant so much to the music scene here in Texas and to punks throughout the U.S."
Influential punk rockers such as Coffey, Minor Threat and Fugazi frontman Ian MacKaye, and producer Steve Albini paid tribute to the Big Boys in essays included in the band's two anthology CDs, "The Skinny Elvis" and "The Fat Elvis." The East North Loop record store Sound on Sound is named after a Big Boys song. Turner went on to sing with Cargo Cult, Swine King and was working on new projects, including visual art.
Neighbors said that Turner was an artistic, off-beat personality who often retreated into his house for days to work on visual art. His neighbors gathered at the corner where his house was and reminisced about the Austin Music Hall of Fame inductee that they knew as a character who took pride in the tree full of plastic blue bottles in his yard, being quirky and creating art.
"He brought such a touch of humor and life to the block," said Robert Goyer, 46, who lives across the street. "He's irreplaceable."
Goyer said Turner would do things like paint snakes on the road. Last year, he hosted an open house where everything in the house was orange — right down to the Cheetos and soda. Other neighbors said that he would offer to watch their animals when they were away. Goyer said that Turner had been looking forward to an art show in Nacogdoches and was excited about the Chronicle article.
"It's my world, and sometimes I retreat to it knowing full well that beyond that front door right there is horror and destruction and death and mayhem," Turner said in the Aug. 19 cover story. "But I know I can't control any of that, and so this little world that I've created here, well, I can barely control that, too, but it's much more fun."

I am navy here in charleston....i know for a fact that the nurses in charge of the clinics in the hospital in north charleston, which is just a few blocks away from the harbor have "freed" up the doctors sched tomorrow so they can attend said drill. i was talking about this to a fellow corpsman and one of the head nurses said we weren't to talk about it, and that he had just freed up the docs to attend the drill. its not to be common knowledge he said. there where no other details discussed.Interviewing further the source, one of the games being played military spokesmen becomes apparent. You see, the Charleston Naval Base is based in the city of North Charleston, South Carolina. So when NORTHCOMM told the Charleston Post and Courier there were no drills scheduled for Charleston -- that didn't include North Charleston, which is a different city. North Charleston contains the Naval ports -- "ports off Charleston."

Maybe you remember a while back when I referred to The Cure as "psychedelic".
Well here's a lot more from somebody who thinks about The Cure too much.
My friend Ted e-mailed me the link to this really great write-up of the big three Cure records.

"Goth morbidity arose in part from a Schopenhauerian scorn for organic life: from Goth’s perspective, death was the truth of sexuality. Sexuality was what the ceaseless cycle of birth-reproduction-death (as icily surveyed by Siouxsie on Dreamhouse’s ‘Circle Line’) needed in order to perpetuate itself. Death was simultaneously outside this circuit and what it was really about. Affirming sexuality meant affirming the world, whereas Goth set itself, in Houllebecq’s marvelous phrase, against the world and against life. By the early eighties, it was possible to posit a rock anti-tradition that had similar affiliations, an anhedonic, anti-vital rock lineage that began with The Stones – with the neurasthenic Jagger of ‘Paint it Black’ rather than the cloven-hooved demonic-Dionysus of ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ - and passed through the Stooges and the Pistols, before reaching its nadir-as-zenith in Joy Division. But Goth suspected that rock was that always and essentially a death trip. This was the gambit of The Birthday Party, who hunted rock’s mythology back to the fetid, voodoo-stalked crossroads and swamplands of the delta blues. Wanda Karriker, Ph.D., a retired psychologist, wrote the novel Morning, Come Quickly to share what she has learned both personally and professionally about ritual abuse, secretive organizations, and mind control torture. She continues to work at endeavors which help to provide validation and healing for the survivor community. Hal Pepinsky - Since the fall of 1993, Hal Pepinsky has as far as he knows been the only university professor to bring more than one ra/mc survivor to his classes. Hal has taught criminal justice for 32 years. Surviving ritual abuse and mind control has become a foundation for his larger thinking on what he calls "peacemaking," establishing safe relations in the face of violence. His topic is ""Inferring Offender Motivation."
Kathleen Sullivan lives in Tennessee with her husband, Bill. She began her recovery in 1989. In 1996, she founded the North American Freedom Foundation (formerly PARC-VRAMC). Her autobiography, Unshackled: A Survivor's Story of Mind Control, was published in 2004. She is now working towards a master's degree in Social Work. Even beginner-level rock beats, which I started playing as early as seventh grade, can start to get the mind working this way, as can other instrument studies as well. I feel better, even if I feel worse...
she just really gets it.
I listened to Billy Childish for years,
and was a huge fan of Thee Headcoatees,
but nobody was surprised as I was that Holly's
records were SOOOOO damn amazing. (fr th rcrd: I bought Kyra's records too,
and everything B. Childish related I could find for years, but Holly's graduated all that...she's really her own thing now, and if you have any feelings in yr bones at all you really need to track some of her recordings down, have a few whiskeys, and listen to the truth she's got to sing... It ain't like she makes a BIG PRODUCTION of it, no miasmas, no drama...just the real "Fuck Me. Fuck You." understated and true.)
anyway, you missed it tonight,
and if you ain't at Helios on Monday fr The Rx Medicine Show,
you'll be missing it again,
you moron.

"On July 25th, German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff passed away at age 76 after a long illness. He was considered Germany's most famous and beloved musician and one of jazz' most accomplished trombonists. Mangelsdorff's career began in the mid '50s through his older brother Emil (a capable jazz saxophonist and flutist who is still active). He played with many different German groups in his native Frankfurt, recording often with Hans Koller's groups. He was a German representative in the Newport Jazz Festival International Youth Band. His first exposure to world audiences came in 1962 when he recorded Animal Dance with the MJQ's John Lewis. From 1963 to 1971, Mangelsdorff led a working group that recorded such seminal European jazz albums as Tension, Now Jazz Ramwong and Never Let It End. He was an active participant in the Norddeutscher Rundfunk big bands for decades as well as a late addition to the Globe Unity Orchestra. From the '70s to the present, Mangelsdorff recorded numerous albums, including several for solo trombone. He was a co-leader of the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble with Wolfgang Dauner. He has been honored numerous times for his accomplishments, most recently in 2003 when his 75th birthday was celebrated in the Royal Opera Hall in Frankfurt. He was Artistic Director for the Berlin Jazz Festival in '90s and a prestigious German jazz prize is named for him, given annually by the German Jazz Union.
In Germany jazz circles, just saying the name "Albert" is enough. Mangelsdorff was involved in every phase of German - and European - from the rise of the big bands to the development of original small groups sounds and the rise of avant garde and free music. His influence on any progressive trombone player cannot be understated and he and Paul Rutherford are almost completely responsible for the ascent of the trombone as a solo instrument. He has been called the #1 trombonist in the world, an appellation he in his modesty eschews. However, with his passing, Europe loses a pioneer and jazz loses an irreplaceable voice." - Andre Henkin from All About Jazz

"On July 25th, German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff passed away at age 76 after a long illness. He was considered Germany's most famous and beloved musician and one of jazz' most accomplished trombonists. Mangelsdorff's career began in the mid '50s through his older brother Emil (a capable jazz saxophonist and flutist who is still active). He played with many different German groups in his native Frankfurt, recording often with Hans Koller's groups. He was a German representative in the Newport Jazz Festival International Youth Band. His first exposure to world audiences came in 1962 when he recorded Animal Dance with the MJQ's John Lewis. From 1963 to 1971, Mangelsdorff led a working group that recorded such seminal European jazz albums as Tension, Now Jazz Ramwong and Never Let It End. He was an active participant in the Norddeutscher Rundfunk big bands for decades as well as a late addition to the Globe Unity Orchestra. From the '70s to the present, Mangelsdorff recorded numerous albums, including several for solo trombone. He was a co-leader of the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble with Wolfgang Dauner. He has been honored numerous times for his accomplishments, most recently in 2003 when his 75th birthday was celebrated in the Royal Opera Hall in Frankfurt. He was Artistic Director for the Berlin Jazz Festival in '90s and a prestigious German jazz prize is named for him, given annually by the German Jazz Union.
In Germany jazz circles, just saying the name "Albert" is enough. Mangelsdorff was involved in every phase of German - and European - from the rise of the big bands to the development of original small groups sounds and the rise of avant garde and free music. His influence on any progressive trombone player cannot be understated and he and Paul Rutherford are almost completely responsible for the ascent of the trombone as a solo instrument. He has been called the #1 trombonist in the world, an appellation he in his modesty eschews. However, with his passing, Europe loses a pioneer and jazz loses an irreplaceable voice." - Andre Henkin from All About Jazz

Shobus Diary documents Shobo Shobo artists O.lamm, Domotic, Davide Balula, and Minifer during their 'Shoboshobus / Mobium Japan Tour 2005'. (Ishida Daisuke is the Japanese host.) Since these are highly original people, this is a bit different from your average rock or laptop tour. Instead of concert halls, the French artists have opted to busk. They've built portable speakers which hang from their necks, each one supporting a laptop. They're playing on the roofs of buildings, at the Tsukiji fish market, in malls and car parks, anywhere. The blog is brilliant, and expanding rapidly with photos, sounds and videos. The Shoboshobus are quite aware of the problematical issues their guerilla tactics raise about disruption, noise pollution and their status as guests in Japan. There's a lot of noise pollution in Japan already, but it tends to be in commercial or industrial areas; areas zoned for residence are hushed. Rehearsals on the roof of Yahiro Factory, where the Shoboshobus are staying, were stopped, for instance, when an employee of the Austin Mini dealership next door shouted that he couldn't stand it any more.

If a legislator wanted to insure the vote of techies everywhere they'd propose a law making it illegal to cripple a device in any way that could possibly interfere with fair use. A sort of anti-DMCA. Of course it would never pass, but it could start some interesting discussions.

In fact a couple of years back I was really into the idea of getting some street theater stuff happening.

this and my recent time spent in the galleria.
If you could get a group of poets we could scatter around the whole place and read poems at random positions inside the mall at regular intervals for say, an hour or so...
Do a short piece, move along, and say, 5-10 minutes later do another.
Seems like that would be fairly effective.

but now I've spent so much time in bed

I did go to the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"
audtions on Wednesday...
didn't pass either test,
but Melissa was there and she got in on the movie week quiz...
and I did read Sartre's "The Condemned of Altona" while I waited in line. Great stuff.
I was at the Galleria from 10:30 till around 3:00, and the guy next to me smelled a little, and had very bad breath.
overall it was probably about as productive as looking for work,
maybe more so, after all, I did finish the Sartre.
