Houston - The Defenestration Unit - Events Search
It’s hard to preview a show by a group of musicians like the frequently expanding and/or contracting sextet that calls itself The Defenestration Unit. Were this band assigned that task, they’d likely shrug the whole thing off as missing the point. Besides, they probably only have a slightly better idea of what’s actually going to happen onstage than you do. As their name implies, the group is in the habit of willful and often joyful discarding of everything that is usually said to define a “band” – they have no particular set-list, instrumentation, or sound, or even fixed membership. Often reductively labeled as free-jazz, the group cartwheels freely through whatever sonic fields fit their fancy that night, though you might well detect the traces of a Sun Ra theme. So let’s just try to leave them with that most general of descriptors: “improvisational music.” And add that Defenestration Unit will stretch your sonic consciousness.

Kim must have been camping near us, as that is Shelley's car in the background.
Kim's entry is a nice introduction to Flipside.
my short summary:
I did not do enough socializing.
I never do.
or more accurately, I'm social in bursts.
Days of no privacy or time alone was harder than even the heat.
It was damned hot during the day.
We mostly sat under our ez-up and fanned ourselves.
Some of us went swimming.
I only went to the creek once.
At night it was loud bright and crazy.
TDU played at least two sets fri, sat, and sun
on the back of a trailer in the art car camp.
Fri night Jim and Doc Bull had not arrived
so there was no guitar,
however, Jo Bird sat in and played viola.
Unfortunately Jim was bringing the recording equipment too,
so there is no document of friday night.
We had crowds dancing at points, and sometimes
we were playing to the same handful that usually
see us in Houston...
although I assume many people could hear us
that I couldn't see.
Some of our most psychedelic music ever.
I didn't do much in the way of lyrics,
but did play the space echo a lot.
had a blast - got to see Aileen and Todd -
the burn and the fireworks were amazing -
i think i lost weight
and i know i got sunburned -
although not as bad as during the art car parade.
things i didn't mention - woola skirt, shit knuckles, BLP's brief flipside premiere, having way too much food and not sharing enough of it (although we got better at it), drinking less whiskey than i expected, glam camp, the sonic forest, the balloon tent, musical tesla coils and so much moe i'm sure...
her's some other flipside posts i found:
The Origin of Peanut Butter Guy -
Peanut Butter Briefcase / Going Through The Motions
A guy at a bar said, "You remember the briefcase from Pulp Fiction? This is that briefcase. Want to see what's in it?" Sure! He opens it up and it is full of chunky peanut butter. Excellent, and disgusting at the same time. A man gets some peanut butter on his fingers and begins to smear it in his hair and on his face. He then opens his mouth and pours beer into it, but without swallowing, so that the beer runs out of his mouth and down his front. He laughs and says, "I'm just going through the motions! I'm not even trying!"

When Christ Comes
is the title of the book dad sent me in the mail.
got here today.
he says I can't imagine how my life will change
when I turn it over to God.
I'm as likely to turn it over to Santa Claus.
I wish I was well enough to go out drinking.

They don't just want to roll back the new deal.
They want to roll back the enlightenment.
This is one of the craziest things I've ever read.

Ron explains why we still need one big union:
Even the press, which once considered itself to be working class, laughs at the notion of worker solidarity. We're supposed to compete with each other these days, not help each other.
Well, that's all crap. We're not the wealthy, and most of us never will be.

Deteriorata!
Deteriorata!
Deteriorata!
The following poem was not found in an old Baltimore church:
Introduction
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.....
Deteriorata! Deteriorata!
Go placidly
Amid the noise and waste.
And remember what comfort there may be
In owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons
Unless you are in need of sleep.
Ro-tate your tires.
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself
And heed well their advice,
Even though they be turkeys.
Know what to kiss.....and when!
Consider that two wrongs never make a right
But that THREE.........do.
Wherever possible, put people on hold.
Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment
And despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer main-te-nance.
Chorus
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Remember the Pueblo.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mu-ti-late.
Know yourself.
If you need help, call the FBI.
Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
Especially with those persons closest to you.
That lemon on your left, for instance.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love therefore;
It will stick to your face.
Gracefully surrender the things of youth:
The birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan
And let not the sands of time
Get in your lunch.
Hire people with hooks.
For a good time call 606-4311;
Ask for "Ken."
Take heart amid the deepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese.
And reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot
It could only be worse in Milwaukee.
Chorus
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.
Therefore, make peace with your god
Whatever you conceive him to be---
Hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises and urban renewal
The world continues to deteriorate.
GIVE UP!
Reprise
You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.

LSD Inventor Albert Hofmann Dead at Age 102 | Wired Science from Wired.com
LSD Inventor Albert Hofmann Dead at Age 102 | Wired Science from Wired.com: "attack at his home in Basel, Switzerland.
Hofmann's most famous discovery happened on April 16, 1943. He was researching the synthesis of a lysergic acid compound, LSD-25, when he inadvertently absorbed a bit through his fingertips. Intrigued by the effect it had on his perception, Hofmann decided further exploration was warranted. Three days later, on April 19, he ingested 250 milligrams of LSD, embarking on the first full-fledged acid trip. That day became known among LSD fans as 'bicycle day' because Hofmann began experiencing the drug's intense effects on his bicycle trip home from the lab."
won't be able to give him a proper memorial till flipside but i am going to propose we dedicate one of TDU's performances to the man that discovered something that changed my life.

experimenting
i'll be working on some short repetetive things here.
the idea being that they can serve as jumping off points for tdu lyrics.
I was able to do a lot of new lyrica at the burning puppet show tdu show recently and i think it was because i was able to jump off from something i had written here.
they might not read good, but chant/sung over whatever crazy thing tdu is doing at any given moment, they might just work.
we're doing shows at discovery green soon and i'm not sure if my normal topics of self-doubt, apocalypse, and drunken self-destructive behavior are the right kind of things to sing about in the park on a sunday.
anyway,
welcome to my bad poetry...
happy to share.

thoughts on my evil twin
I like bad me. Bad me is alive. Good me is some kind of zombie. He
believes in things but does nothing. Bad me is an action man.
Although my bad actions have bore bitter fruit I would do them all
again. They made me feel alive.

our liar in chief
just finished yapping it up on the cnn
they are now saying that is it confusing
it is not confusing
unless you are stupid
they are creating a police state
and some members of congress
are fighting it for once
but the worst president ever
wants to make sure
his pet corporations
aren't punished
for breaking the law
is that confusing?

Philip Gibbs interview
Philip Gibbs interview:
"Q: If you say, got a chimpanzee, and stuck some sweets on to your guitar strings, would the chimps efforts to remove the sweets end up sounding like some free improvised music, and would you be able to tell if this is real music or not? Because music is sound, after all.
A: Yes I’m sure the chimp’s efforts would sound like some free improvised music, and that music would contain the creators (in this case the chimp) stamp. For some listeners the result would be perfectly satisfying and for others not. I think any ‘musical’ events in this case would be accidental (and all the more apparent as the piece progressed) and as such, it would be divorced from the higher aspect of creative consciousness I have alluded to earlier. Whether anyone could tell or not isn’t necessarily the point (unless they are writing a review!) its whether or not it quenches your particular thirst. Having said that, if large expanses of my work could easily be confused with that of a chimp’s, I would seriously reconsider my options! For me music is ‘made up’ of sound, it is in a sense sound PLUS craft…..hence the ‘art’ of music. It’s a subtle difference."

Paul Rogers interview:
"PG: Do you think that in the course of, let's say, an hour-long improvisation there is the potential for a lot of uncreative music?
PR: No, not if you are improvising properly. When you're playing, you can't be thinking about what you are playing - that's too slow. You have to act on the musical elements at that particular time, and do it honestly without ego, playing for the good of the music rather than some self-indulgence. And each person has his own way of doing that; someone might play very little, someone else a lot. But even when silent you should still be in the music. If there are ten people on stage and there is a drum solo, there are ten people involved in the drum solo ... plus the audience. If someone starts talking or goes out of the room the musical dynamics change."

"PG: What music were you listening to at that time?
PR: My older brother would bring records into the house so I heard things like The Who, Jimi Hendrix ... and Cream I really liked at that time. And I'd also heard improvised music on the radio, people like John Stevens, Derek Bailey, etc., and that really turned me on to wanting to play. But I was told that you couldn't play improvised music unless you play jazz. That was the thinking in those days; some people maybe think that now. In fact, some people actually think you improvise because you can't play music! It amazes me how uneducated these people must be because we all know most people only play tunes because they can't improvise, and they play other people's music because they haven't got any of their own! Anyway, I left school shortly before my sixteenth birthday and as there were no options for going to college, etc., I apprenticed as a carpenter for a couple of years before moving to London around 1974."

ABC News: It Wasn't the Sex; Suspicious $$ Transfers Led to Spitzer:
"The federal investigation of a New York prostitution ring was triggered by Gov. Eliot Spitzer's suspicious money transfers, initially leading agents to believe Spitzer was hiding bribes, according to federal officials.
It was only months later that the IRS and the FBI determined that Spitzer wasn't hiding bribes but payments to a company called QAT, what prosecutors say is a prostitution operation operating under the name of the Emperors Club."
I am pissed about a lot of things right now.
Unhappy about a lot of things.
but fuckin' Spitzer...
a man I referred to as a Super-Hero -
one of the great progressive hopes -
fuckin' around - the Mann Act -
the goddamned Mann Act?
really?
did he not understand that they would
burn him on this?
that they would get him on anything they could?
that he had to be squeakier than squeaky clean?
he did so much good as AG.
had so much potential as governor,
and a helluva future...
fuckin' moron.

NonAlignment Pact: Music in Seven Days from Seven Writers
best McCain rally coverage ever:
NonAlignment Pact: Music in Seven Days from Seven Writers:
"There was a middle-aged white man who looked like Bum Phillips dressed in University of Texas garb who looked at a woman wearing a white sweater with multiple American flags sewn on it and said, 'You look like a young Kay Bailey Hutchison. I mean that in a good way.'"

origins of words and phrases
origins of words and phrases:
"rule of thumb -No, this phrase is definitely NOT 'P.C'! Who knew? 'Rule of thumb' derived from the days when woman were sometimes beaten with a switch. To be 'kind' the switch could not be thicker than a thumb's width. This was made law in 1782 when an English judge stated that men were allowed to beat their wives but that the stick could not be thicker than one's thumb."

Three Cheers for Hot Shoes!
Dr. Rock Positano: High Heels And Your Sex Drive - Living on The Huffington Post: "Better for your health, better for your sex life, and better to renew your pelvic pleasures. Hard to believe that we're talking about wearing high heels, but recent studies reverse the old negative publicity which blasted those staples of everyday women's existence...studies which blamed high heels as a cause of bad posture, stress fractures and other injury. Now they're just the cure for failing sex drives according to a recent study published in the journal, European Urology. And just the cure for admiring men as well as consumer women."

The spirits behind the writers - Los Angeles Times
The spirits behind the writers - Los Angeles Times: " Why do scribblers make drinking their second art? For one thing, it primes them for their task. In 1714, a young Alexander Pope , in an affectionate letter to a lady, began, "Most Divine! -- 'Tis some proof of my sincerity towards you that I write when I am prepared by drinking to speak truth." Keats, in an 1819 letter, described how "ethereal" claret "mounts into the brain" and makes one "a Hermes," god of, among other things, eloquence. "A good sherris-sack," said Falstaff (speaking, no doubt, for Shakespeare himself) "... ascends me into the brain; dries me there all the foolish and dull and crudy vapours which environ it; makes it apprehensive, quick, forgetive, full of nimble, fiery and delectable shapes which, delivered o'er to the voice, the tongue, which is the birth, becomes excellent wit." Well, perhaps."

neil young time machine
ok...
two songs have nothing to do with Neil Young, but do have something to do with the future.
I knew the Devo with Neil existed, but hadn't ever come across it before.
The Sonic Youth cover of "Computer Age" almsot makes Neil's Trans seem like a good idea. It wasn't.

file under - drunk blogging
haven't done much substantial blogging in a while.
going to vote and caucas tomorrow...
think hillary is better on most of the issues,
but not sure she can beat McCain...
still not sure what I'm going to do.
Feeling broken lately -
been on the wrong track
(or some of the wrong tracks)
for maybe a couple of years
and I'm contemplating
some big changes -
gotta do something -
just not sure what yet.
New job?
New city?
Chase a somewhat appropriate woman?
I suppose anything is possible,
although not much is likely...
I guess we'll see.
feeling the disconnect pretty strongly.
at a point in my life where i have alienated
most of the people I've known longest,
and I'm not sure who to talk to,
or even where to start.
so instead of talking - maybe doing
is the key.
politically, we're fairly fucked right now.
the administration is STILL getting
away with damned near everything -
even though shrub's approval is something
like 19%.
I'm still sharing all the stuff I come across
on google reader that makes me want to holler.
it is over to the right.
and yes, i'm already drunk...
$2.50 wells at boondocks every night 5-9.
so three vodkas before dinner = drunk.
and so... i post.

What Was I Thinking?: Books: The New Yorker
What Was I Thinking?: Books: The New Yorker:
"Rational calculators are supposed to consider their options, then pick the one that maximizes the benefit to them. Yet actual economic life, as opposed to the theoretical version, is full of miscalculations, from the gallon jar of mayonnaise purchased at spectacular savings to the billions of dollars Americans will spend this year to service their credit-card debt. The real mystery, it could be argued, isn’t why we make so many poor economic choices but why we persist in accepting economic theory."
exactly. it is hogwash. people are no more rational actors than pigs, maybe less so.

a devilish gleam
a devilish gleam
has left my eye
replaced by an
old, familiar,
dead look
the wrong women
the wrong things
till feeling feels wrong
and the heavy returns
and i put on the mask
and things get
comfortable bad
no real resolution
just part of the cycle
this old, familiar,
dead look
this comfortable bad
this sleeping too little
or too much
this mask
this death
of desire
