one who remembers when their party stood for more than some kinda imperial cronyism...
but anyone my age or younger...

Reagan was President from the time I was 10 till the time I was 18. The 80's were Reagan and A.I.D.S. so yeah, I get upset when I see cute young girls dressed like Pat Benatar...
but I digress...
The Republican Party has been bankrupt and soulless almost as long as it has been in power. The Reagan revolution may have had some genuine ideas and thought behind it (I'm guessing it didn't have much, but after GW I'm even willing to give G Sr. the a little benefit of a lot of doubt) but since then there has been little thought to the real effects of their policies. They might as well be Maoists promoting the great leap forward as their people starve. The policies they have pushed forward since I was ten have simply proven not to work - not to increase the greater good. Am I some kinda lefty? yeah, but I am also a pragmatist. If their shit didn't stink, I wouldn't hold my nose just for show... If their positions played out so that things got better they'd have my support. It is just not the way things are.
eh, I'm a little drunk, and a lot grumpy...
time to go to bed and try not to grit my teeth...

"Here is how the political and economic system has been ripping off workers. Once upon a time, if you worked hard and were productive, that translated directly into your paycheck. Not anymore. From 2000 to roughly 2007, productivity went up 20 percent--while the median hourly wage was up 3 percent. My friend Joel Rogers,director of the Center on Wisconsin Strategy, made a stunning calculation not too long ago: Had wages tracked productivity as they have over the past 30 years, 'median family income in the U.S. would be about $20,000 higher today than it is.' Check this out: Taking into account productivity, the minimum wage should be $19.12---which would make it almost 50 percent above today's median wage (not to mention the pathetic $6.55)."
The system is rigged folks.
The market doesn't actually follow market rules - it follows the desires of those with the power to manipulate it.
Whether it is wages or stocks or, god forbid, derivatives - the market - the game is rigged.
I was a broker for a while in the day trading industry.
Traders, at least a few of them that I knew, at these shady little places I worked had left jobs in the real brokerage world because what they were doing there, and being asked to do weighed too heavy on their conscience. I only have anecdotal evidence, but since nobody is looking for real evidence that may be all we get. That said I have heard stories that make me believe that honestly the best place for your money is under your mattress.
I am not suggesting that business leaders have secretly colluded to keep the minimum wage down compared to productivity. They have publicly done so. What do you think the Chamber of Commerce does? How many lobbyists for businesses support politicians who believe or at least promote the false claim that raising the minimum wage hurts small business? Heads of industry destroyed the labor movement and have publicly worked with the government to strip power from unions, as well as workers access to unions. This leaves the power in the hands of capital. If we were still a nation of fighters, a nation of communities, a nation people who cared we would have never got to this state.
Where is Big Bill Haywood when you need him?

We can't expect Bill Haywood or Barack Obama to save us.
We need to stand up
and save ourselves.

the daily show and this guy Richard Engel just said something about the President saying something like we wouldn't know if the war on terror was a success for at least 40 years - and then he talked about the cold war - said it took us at least that long to know if it was a success - I assume he means the fall of the berlin wall and the collapse of Russia - how is this success?
i guess walls going down are good - but look at how we're doing over here on the winning side - what the cold war cost us - what the war on terror is costing us - is incalcuable - we have been on a wartime economy since WWII - this is insane - the scarcity is manufactured - your universal heathcare is being made into a bomb as we speak - your solar power conversion is paying blackwater's salary -

It’s hard to preview a show by a group of musicians like the frequently expanding and/or contracting sextet that calls itself The Defenestration Unit. Were this band assigned that task, they’d likely shrug the whole thing off as missing the point. Besides, they probably only have a slightly better idea of what’s actually going to happen onstage than you do. As their name implies, the group is in the habit of willful and often joyful discarding of everything that is usually said to define a “band” – they have no particular set-list, instrumentation, or sound, or even fixed membership. Often reductively labeled as free-jazz, the group cartwheels freely through whatever sonic fields fit their fancy that night, though you might well detect the traces of a Sun Ra theme. So let’s just try to leave them with that most general of descriptors: “improvisational music.” And add that Defenestration Unit will stretch your sonic consciousness.

Kim must have been camping near us, as that is Shelley's car in the background.

my short summary:
I did not do enough socializing.
I never do.
or more accurately, I'm social in bursts.
Days of no privacy or time alone was harder than even the heat.
It was damned hot during the day.
We mostly sat under our ez-up and fanned ourselves.
Some of us went swimming.
I only went to the creek once.
At night it was loud bright and crazy.
TDU played at least two sets fri, sat, and sun
on the back of a trailer in the art car camp.
Fri night Jim and Doc Bull had not arrived
so there was no guitar,
however, Jo Bird sat in and played viola.
Unfortunately Jim was bringing the recording equipment too,
so there is no document of friday night.
We had crowds dancing at points, and sometimes
we were playing to the same handful that usually
see us in Houston...
although I assume many people could hear us
that I couldn't see.
Some of our most psychedelic music ever.
I didn't do much in the way of lyrics,
but did play the space echo a lot.
had a blast - got to see Aileen and Todd -
the burn and the fireworks were amazing -
i think i lost weight
and i know i got sunburned -
although not as bad as during the art car parade.
things i didn't mention - woola skirt, shit knuckles, BLP's brief flipside premiere, having way too much food and not sharing enough of it (although we got better at it), drinking less whiskey than i expected, glam camp, the sonic forest, the balloon tent, musical tesla coils and so much moe i'm sure...

A guy at a bar said, "You remember the briefcase from Pulp Fiction? This is that briefcase. Want to see what's in it?" Sure! He opens it up and it is full of chunky peanut butter. Excellent, and disgusting at the same time. A man gets some peanut butter on his fingers and begins to smear it in his hair and on his face. He then opens his mouth and pours beer into it, but without swallowing, so that the beer runs out of his mouth and down his front. He laughs and says, "I'm just going through the motions! I'm not even trying!"

experimenting
i'll be working on some short repetetive things here.
the idea being that they can serve as jumping off points for tdu lyrics.
I was able to do a lot of new lyrica at the burning puppet show tdu show recently and i think it was because i was able to jump off from something i had written here.
they might not read good, but chant/sung over whatever crazy thing tdu is doing at any given moment, they might just work.
we're doing shows at discovery green soon and i'm not sure if my normal topics of self-doubt, apocalypse, and drunken self-destructive behavior are the right kind of things to sing about in the park on a sunday.
