I've said again and again if you want to see an example of how the system is rigged you have to look no further than than the way the "free market" handles capital vs. how it handles labor.
Until labor is as free to move across borders and organize itself as capital is all talk of "free markets" is just so much hot air.

"Mr. Knowlson would make frequent trips to Beckett's Paris apartment and return with a briefcase full of manuscripts each time. Among them was an item that Mr. Garforth describes as 'one of the Holy Grails of Beckett studies': the Whoroscope notebook, named after an early poem of Beckett's. It holds jottings from the 1930s in English, French, German, Latin, and Greek on everything from the weight of the Eiffel Tower to musical notations from The Marriage of Figaro.
'It's devastating, the amount of material there,' Mr. Garforth says. 'All sorts of weird and wonderful facts and figures. Sometimes it can be decades later before they surface in another work.'
The notebook, which measures about 4 inches by 6 inches and has a burgundy cloth cover, doesn't leave its special case very often. It accompanied Beckett on an extended German trip in 1936-37. 'It's obviously been in his pocket the six months he traveled around Germany,' the archivist says. 'It looks beautiful. It smells beautiful. You could read it forever and find something new each time you look through it.'"

I think ultimately, bad or good movie, this is a good thing.

'near' complete cause i'm sitting here alive and typing this today. was having many problems and my relationship at the time was going less than swimmingly. so, one particularly miserable day, after a hard 10 spent giving 90 minute narrated historical tours to the obnoxious denizens of clueless walking checkbooks known as tourists (nothing against all tourists, but i met a lot of dicks,) i hit the KHYBER, downed a dozen shots of bourbon plus countless beers under the company of ultra kind barman and local underground cartoonist 'flip,' bounced into a tattoo shop and plunked down $100 clams to get my lady's name in a heart inked on my right wrist, went back to the bar for a few more, and staggered home over the crunching leaves of the booze soaked autumn twilight to tell her that i was too crazy for our relationship to work and that we were through. "

I'm not just in rehearsal for "Speeding Motorcycle" right now...
I'm also rehearsin a show that can only be described as "bad-ass theatre".
That's right kids! The BLP is back! with "ASSHOLE PARADE!"
If I had to describe it I'd say I already said, "It can only be described as 'Bad-Ass Theatre'" but if you needed more I might say, "it's something like Adult Swim meets Hee-Haw...
but really it's so much more...
(and less, I mean it's not animated and does not feature Buck Owens,
but there is singin and dancin and actin and all that fancy theatre stuff
except without the stuff that sucks except for the parts that might suck,
but I don't think there'll be many, mostly I think it'll rock...
whatta you think?)"

so, yeah, there's that, but, wow, there's like so much, ya know? ya know?

The show is running now through April 15 on Friday and Saturday nights @ 8pm. Tickets are only $10! There is a special pay-what-you-want performance THIS MONDAY, APRIL 10 @ 8pm.

[sic] In the old days, Melissa James Gibson's comedy of manners would've been called experimental and avant-garde because of its overlapping dialogue, non sequiturs, intimate asides to the audience, flaccid plotline, linguistic flourishes, time bends and slacker characters not knowing which way to turn. It's still that -- the play's even written without punctuation -- but the old-hat unconventionality of its literary pretensions seems fresh and breezy in Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company's winsome production. Three loser friends live next door to one another on the third floor of a ratty apartment building in a nameless big city. These empathetic sad sacks, whose failures are ingrained within them, are joined at the soul; they're thirtysomethings who can't make anything work in their lives. Their constant bickering, teasing and dreaming only draw them more tightly together. Pining for what they can't have, they feed off one another. Hack musician Theo (Eric Doss) stumbles over composing a theme song for the Thrill-A-Rama ride at the amusement park; overly analytical writer Babette (Jennifer Decker) can't finish her magnum opus of "20th-century outbursts"; gay Frank (Alan Hall) obsesses over his ex-boyfriend, who introduced the three to one another, and practices to be an auctioneer by reciting tongue-twisters. Adding to the enchanting disenchantment of their lives are the disembodied angry voices rising from the air shaft and the surprisingly frisky -- and also unseen -- Mrs. Jorgensen down the hall, who may be dead, sleeping or sleeping around. This clever, brainy, constantly amusing play, superbly acted and gracefully directed by Michelle Edwards, may be about failure and dashed hopes, but it succeeds like gangbusters. Through April 15. I would paint a mural of Ronald Reagan, because he doesn’t have enough shit in his honor around Washington. The Capitol would make the perfect place for a new memorial to our 40th President. I’d paint it of his life: the son of a hard working New Deal union man who grows up to become President of the SAG. This would segue into the part of his life where he stabs his fellow union members in the back by negotiating sweetheart deals with the mob and outing the Communists. His dad would be watching in the background with an “I�€™m disappointed in you, son,” look. You know, like when your dad doesn�€™t yell but makes you feel really bad? And then, I would move on to the part where he divorces his first wife and estranges himself from his kids. Oh yeah, then on to the part where he marries Nancy so he can run for office. Art in Real-Time: Theatre and Virtual Reality: "One of the first scenes to ever be staged with VR technology remains one of the best examples of its potential; scene 2, in which Zero is fired by his boss. At the beginning of this scene, the characters of Zero and Daisy are working at the office, Daisy reading numbers wile Zero adds them. Behind them is a representation of the office and what appears to be the actors’ shadows on the screen. As Zero and Daisy grow weary of the monotonous task and begin to daydream, the actors leave their positions and. move about the stage while speaking their dream monologues. However, the shadows remain in their original positions. This effect was used to visually demonstrate that the characters have not actually left their work and the movement of the actors is only psychological. At the same time the virtual office is moved into the far background as another sigh that the character’s minds have traveled far from their jobs. Later in the scene Zero interacts with his Boss, portrayed by an actor who performs off-stage in front of a video camera. The video image of the boss was then superimposed into the computer generated office. By zooming the camera, the boss was be made to 'grow' during the scene appearing larger as he becomes more of a threat to Zero. In the end, the Boss fires Zero and his laughing face fills the entire screen. "

whooohoooo!
so, went to an IBP meeting last night (stategic planning comittee, company development) and then came home and started reading "the fervent years"...
gonna get some thoughts down on a couple of things...
are musicans theater artists? When they are performing or recording for the theater, then undoubtedly they are. Does just knowing how to play a guitar make you a theater artist? No. However, making music for the theater implies/requires a different set of concerns than just "rockin' out" or most any variation thereof. Inasmuch as and when a musician is involved in making theater, and they are taking the concerns of theater seriously, they are theater artists.
that's obvious, right?
What are the particular concerns of our times? How do we portray them in a way that they also address universal concerns? Are particular concerns always an example of at least a class of universal concerns? I have no idea.
I few years ago I got all hot and bothered about the idea of street theater,
and for a short while tried to get some things going on that front...
some of those ideas still threaten to resurface from time to time.
I still love the idea of an update of "the king play".

One of the first plays mentioned in "The Fervent Years" is "The Adding Machine" -
"Plays about the nullity of the average man, like Elmer Rice's Adding Machine, were high-brow amusement."

and the more I think about that comment and the script and my take on it,
the more I think I am preparing to subvert the author's intention.
I'm o.k. with that, as long as it results in a good show, and not mush...
I know I want the audience to see the shades around what appears to be so much
black and white. We'll see.

gonna get some thoughts down on a couple of things...
are musicans theater artists? When they are performing or recording for the theater, then undoubtedly they are. Does just knowing how to play a guitar make you a theater artist? No. However, making music for the theater implies/requires a different set of concerns than just "rockin' out" or most any variation thereof. Inasmuch as and when a musician is involved in making theater, and they are taking the concerns of theater seriously, they are theater artists.
that's obvious, right?
What are the particular concerns of our times? How do we portray them in a way that they also address universal concerns? Are particular concerns always an example of at least a class of universal concerns? I have no idea.
I few years ago I got all hot and bothered about the idea of street theater,
and for a short while tried to get some things going on that front...
some of those ideas still threaten to resurface from time to time.
I still love the idea of an update of "the king play".

Click opera - March 3rd, 2006: "I also felt a bit mean telling people looking at the Daniel Johnston cartoons that Johnston actually gets these drawn by a 14 year-old in Hong Kong who's only paid $5 per drawing, and that Johnston, far from being some kind of outsider artist, is in fact an advertising man working on Madison Avenue (which happens to be the Whitney's address). Or that a slide sequence of Nan Goldin-like nudes had been made in iPhoto and iTunes, and been demoed by Steve Jobs at the last Apple Expo. In fact, I felt like someone might punch me saying these things. So as the day wore on (and no doubt as my blood sugar levels declined -- I didn't even stop for lunch) I got a bit more poetic and lyrical, sitting on the floor in the corner of rooms with more ambient washes of electronic sound in them, improvising abstract imagery in a 'mesmeric' voice. I enjoyed that; it was a bit like being an improvising poet in residence, and I felt like I wasn't going against the grain of the work on display or irritating people too much."

haven't been blogging much...
mostly been hiding in the cave.

and getting ready for auditions

lots of sleeping...
not enough looking for work.
this is what's going on.
The lower the President's approval rating gets
the less angry I feel
and the less vital political blogging seems...
of course that leaves me more free time
for reading about the lizard people, etc,
but I really haven't been doing much of that either.
I could write about the big open sore on my leg,
but I don't think you want to read it.
Gross is not really my thing.

I like my Batman a little tortured and crazy,
my Wonder Woman a warrior, and my Green Lantern a mass murderer - o.k. that last one is a joke, although I do still have some issues with Hal Jordan being back,
and I grew up with Hal Jordan and Barry Allen...
I had DC ship me "Green Lantern" and "Flash" every month. They weren't bagged in mylar and backed with acid free cardboard. They came in brown paper, in the regular mail, and they were magic. Green Lantern was a grand space opera, Hal Jordan a man without fear. After the original crisis I guess I stopped really paying attention, and somewhere down the line I think they made Hal an alcoholic, and then they had him go nuts...and he killed alot of people...800 and something , sacrificed his life eventually to save the world, did some time as the spectre, and now he's back. Shouldn't he get credit for saving the world? Shouldn't that wipe out all the bad stuff? No. That's what superheroes do. They save the world. That's the job.
Anyway, GL is just one of the titles/family of titles that just got more or less rebooted (Titans, Outsiders, Legion, etc.) and now we're about to pick up "one year later" after the new crisis... It looks like there really will be some major changes in the primary DC universe, if they do go back to the "multi-verse" (which I'm not convinced is happening), but I really have no idea what they could be. It could go in pretty much any direction from what we've seen so far.
I really dig the new Battlestar Galactica,
and I have high hopes for the new DC Universe.
The Crisis and all it's tie-ins are being as well written and nicely handled as any of these big events ever are...
much better than "House of M/Decimation" over at Marvel.
I did enjoy "The Other" in the Spiderman books,
and I'm curious about "Civil War" but generally
I think I'm more interested in Marvel movies,
and DC books these days.
But of course the best realization of the DC Universe is, hands down, the animated DCU of "Justice League Unlimited" and all the precursors to it - an amazing amount of continuity, great takes on the characters (visually and otherwise), it pretty much has it all...
Really. Any of you who are or once were DC fanboys should seek out the DVD's of any of the animated DCU stuff from recent years. I'm worried about the animated DCU now too though. Apparently "JLU" is over, and if "The Batman" is the new direction they are going in (c'mon man, the penguin doing kung-fu?) I'm not terribly excited...

the most interesting things I learned here is that Dirk Benedict is kind of a jerk and that he gets be a "cancer survivor" after being diagnosed by a psychic and and healing himself through a macrobiotic diet.
The voices in my head told me I had ebola,
but I cured it with 8 glasses of water a day.
Can I call myself an ebola survivor now?

Uncle Vanya
so, I know I bug you a lot about shows,
and probably you either just ignore me
now, or ya don't, and it doesn't matter much
what I'm gonna say,
but I'm gonna say it anyway...
this is a beautiful show.
there are amazing things happening -
character to character, actor to actor, actor to audience,
and every possible permutation thereof, it's beautiful...
it's also sad, and funny, and and all that other messy human stuff...
It's about regret, and change, and midlife crises, and unrequited love, and loveless marriage, and getting old, and all that...
is it perfect?
no, if it were perfect it wouldn't be beautiful,
it'd be dead.
but it's not,
it's alive -
every night...
got interrupted by someone coming by,
and had to go do the show...
afterwards, someone said to me,
"well, you have to like russian literature..."
and of course you do, so this play is perfect
for you, right?
anyway, come see "Uncle Vanya" -
you won't be disappointed.

and ultimately meaningless compared to the show itself...

"Although it´s set in late-19th-century, rural Russia, the themes are timeless and universal. It´s a play in which nothing happens and everything happens. Chekhov vividly renders the human condition with all its hopes, dreams, struggles, disappointments, failures, and ultimately, resignation. Is it sad? Yes, but it´s funny, too. I often find myself simultaneously laughing and crying right along with these characters. I´m also thrilled to be working with an excellent ensemble of unique and talented actors, who are quite suited for their various roles."
