Eno Blogging: the original soundtrack
via Warren Ellis:
the original soundtrack:
"Frustrated by this, I put on Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy), and as 'Mother Whale Eyeless' was spinning these lyrics flew out:
'Take me--my little pastry mother take me--there's a pie shop in the sky...'
The proof was in the pudding. The answer was suddenly crystal-clear: I had to see how Eno worked. Not in the studio, but in the kitchen. ("

Polite Dissent Lex Luthor Knows Musical Theater: comics, medicine, and medical comics
Polite Dissent Lex Luthor Knows Musical Theater: comics, medicine, and medical comics:
"Apparently Superman’s not the only one with a taste for Broadway. Here’s Lex Luthor — in his battlesuit even — letting loose with a little improptu song from Oklahoma!"
Let me take this opportunity to say that while I am not enthused about a Batman musical I would be interested in a Lex Luthor or Dr. Doom opera.
Yes, I am a nerd.

Why don’t grown-ups believe in Santa Claus? at Pandagon
Why don’t grown-ups believe in Santa Claus? at Pandagon:
"Actually, now that I think about it, there’s really only one real argument for religion, which is social control. The spirituality argument is really the inverse of the “nice soul, be a shame if something happened to it” argument. Hell is coal in your stocking, spiritual bliss in heaven is the new Nintendo system under the tree. Even in real world terms, your spiritual reward that you get belonging to the church is dependent on your compliance to community’s norms. But the post-death promises are important all the same because otherwise you might get the idea that you can have an empowered exchange of good behavior for social acceptance and for some damn reason, that’ll never do."
wait a minute...
there's no santa claus?

more press for the show!
yay!
houstonpress.com | Music | Motorcycle Madness: "The most recent feather in Johnston's eccentric career cap is the brand-new rock opera Speeding Motorcycle, lovingly mounted by Houston's Infernal Bridegroom Productions. Two years in the making and funded by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, Motorcycle is a two-act musical narrative culled from Johnston's extensive body of work."

Think Progress New Presidential Memorandum Permits Intelligence Director To Authorize Telcos To Lie Without Violating Securities Law
Think Progress New Presidential Memorandum Permits Intelligence Director To Authorize Telcos To Lie Without Violating Securities Law:
"In recent days, AT&T, Bell South and Verizon have all issued statements denying that they’ve handed over phone records to the NSA, as reported by USA today.
There are three possibilities:
1) The USA Today story is inaccurate;
2) The telcos left enough wiggle room in the statements that both the USA Today story and their statements are accurate; or
3) The statements from the telcos are inaccurate.
Ordinarily, a company that conceals their transactions and activities from the public would violate securities law. But an presidential memorandum signed by the President on May 5 allows the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, to authorize a company to conceal activities related to national security. (See 15 U.S.C. 78m(b)(3)(A))"
This is the worst bunch of criminals we've ever had in office...
worse than Reagan's or Nixon's bunch.
No respect for the law whatsoever.
Insane.

This Modern World Blog Archive “The Conservative Nanny State” by Dean Baker
This Modern World Blog Archive “The Conservative Nanny State” by Dean Baker:
"For decades the media (and conservatives) have pushed a particular framing of political views on the economy: conservatives favor free market policies, while progressives want the government to intervene in the market. In fact, The Conservative Nanny State explains, this is completely untrue: conservatives are strongly anti-free market. They depend on the government to make the wealthiest people in America even more stupendously rich."
Baker's giving it away as an e-book...
go get it.
I've said again and again if you want to see an example of how the system is rigged you have to look no further than than the way the "free market" handles capital vs. how it handles labor.
Until labor is as free to move across borders and organize itself as capital is all talk of "free markets" is just so much hot air.
The game is rigged.
