Subject: Boston Marriage
One of America’s most provocative playwrights displays his feminine side in the Houston premiere of David Mamet’s Boston Marriage. Unhinged Productions is proud to present the show that the New York Post called “Wickedly, wittily entertaining” when it made its New York premiere in 2002.
In the play, Anna and Claire are two bantering, scheming “women of fashion” who have been living on the edges of upper-class society. Anna, having just become the mistress of a wealthy married man, receives an enormous jeweled necklace with a nice salary to match. Claire, meanwhile, has become enamored with a young lady and wants to enlist a very jealous Anna for help. As the two women exchange quips and relentlessly taunt Anna’s Scottish parlor maid, Claire’s young lady arrives which produces a predicament that puts both women’s futures at risk.
In the Boston Marriage, Mamet exquisitely typifies this ambiguous relationship between two unmarried Victorian women. Mamet utilizes his hallmark dialogue with an Oscar Wilde like wit.
Unhinged Productions is also proud to announce the directing debut of Michelle Edwards with this production. “We are thrilled to have such an accomplished actress as Michelle, make her directing debut with us,” said Unhinged Productions Interim Artistic Director Randy Symank. The cast includes Sara Gaston as Anna, Patricia Duran as Claire, and Kelley Stolte as Catherine.
Unhinged Productions continues its season at Stages Repertory Theatre in the Houston Center for the Arts on 3201 Allen Parkway. The 2004-2005 season is being presented with special support provided by Stages Repertory Theatre.
