This one's for you Ryan...
you can go read Corrente talk about the bad Pope.

Yeah, I read a story a few months back about the Vatican/Pinochet connection.

Disclosure: I don't watch a whole lot of TV anymore, but the TV in the waiting room at the Kwik Kar (where I was getting my oil changed last week) was turned to Fox News when the Vatican announced the Pope's death. So maybe that's colored my perspective of things.

I read the other day that the Pope's death has been one of the most heavily covered stories of all time, with three times as many stories about his death published as there were in the aftermath of September 11. It seems to me that in all those stories there should be at least some critical perspective of his papacy: Pinochet, the role of women in the church, the secrecy and insularity that probably led to kids getting molested by priests, his replacement of moderate socialist cardinals with non-socialist ones, sexuality, &c.

Especially since the news media never seems to bat an eye at offering perspective on leaders of the Muslim world.
