When Christ Comes

is the title of the book dad sent me in the mail.
got here today.
he says I can't imagine how my life will change
when I turn it over to God.
I'm as likely to turn it over to Santa Claus.

I wish I was well enough to go out drinking.

REAL ART (and politics and culture)

Ron explains why we still need one big union:

Even the press, which once considered itself to be working class, laughs at the notion of worker solidarity. We're supposed to compete with each other these days, not help each other.

Well, that's all crap. We're not the wealthy, and most of us never will be.

Deteriorata!

Deteriorata!

Deteriorata!

The following poem was not found in an old Baltimore church:

Introduction

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.....
Deteriorata! Deteriorata!

Go placidly
Amid the noise and waste.
And remember what comfort there may be
In owning a piece thereof.

Avoid quiet and passive persons
Unless you are in need of sleep.

Ro-tate your tires.

Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself
And heed well their advice,
Even though they be turkeys.

Know what to kiss.....and when!

Consider that two wrongs never make a right
But that THREE.........do.

Wherever possible, put people on hold.

Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment
And despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer main-te-nance.

Chorus

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.

Remember the Pueblo.

Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mu-ti-late.

Know yourself.
If you need help, call the FBI.

Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
Especially with those persons closest to you.
That lemon on your left, for instance.

Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet.

Fall not in love therefore;
It will stick to your face.

Gracefully surrender the things of youth:
The birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan
And let not the sands of time
Get in your lunch.

Hire people with hooks.

For a good time call 606-4311;
Ask for "Ken."

Take heart amid the deepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese.

And reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot
It could only be worse in Milwaukee.

Chorus

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.

Therefore, make peace with your god
Whatever you conceive him to be---
Hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.

With all its hopes, dreams, promises and urban renewal
The world continues to deteriorate.

GIVE UP!

Reprise

You are a fluke
Of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back.

LSD Inventor Albert Hofmann Dead at Age 102 | Wired Science from Wired.com

LSD Inventor Albert Hofmann Dead at Age 102 | Wired Science from Wired.com: "attack at his home in Basel, Switzerland.

Hofmann's most famous discovery happened on April 16, 1943. He was researching the synthesis of a lysergic acid compound, LSD-25, when he inadvertently absorbed a bit through his fingertips. Intrigued by the effect it had on his perception, Hofmann decided further exploration was warranted. Three days later, on April 19, he ingested 250 milligrams of LSD, embarking on the first full-fledged acid trip. That day became known among LSD fans as 'bicycle day' because Hofmann began experiencing the drug's intense effects on his bicycle trip home from the lab."

won't be able to give him a proper memorial till flipside but i am going to propose we dedicate one of TDU's performances to the man that discovered something that changed my life.

i'll be working on some short repetetive things here.
the idea being that they can serve as jumping off points for tdu lyrics.
I was able to do a lot of new lyrica at the burning puppet show tdu show recently and i think it was because i was able to jump off from something i had written here.

they might not read good, but chant/sung over whatever crazy thing tdu is doing at any given moment, they might just work.

we're doing shows at discovery green soon and i'm not sure if my normal topics of self-doubt, apocalypse, and drunken self-destructive behavior are the right kind of things to sing about in the park on a sunday.

anyway,

Philip Gibbs interview

Philip Gibbs interview:
"Q: If you say, got a chimpanzee, and stuck some sweets on to your guitar strings, would the chimps efforts to remove the sweets end up sounding like some free improvised music, and would you be able to tell if this is real music or not? Because music is sound, after all.

A: Yes I’m sure the chimp’s efforts would sound like some free improvised music, and that music would contain the creators (in this case the chimp) stamp. For some listeners the result would be perfectly satisfying and for others not. I think any ‘musical’ events in this case would be accidental (and all the more apparent as the piece progressed) and as such, it would be divorced from the higher aspect of creative consciousness I have alluded to earlier. Whether anyone could tell or not isn’t necessarily the point (unless they are writing a review!) its whether or not it quenches your particular thirst. Having said that, if large expanses of my work could easily be confused with that of a chimp’s, I would seriously reconsider my options! For me music is ‘made up’ of sound, it is in a sense sound PLUS craft…..hence the ‘art’ of music. It’s a subtle difference."

Paul Rogers interview

Paul Rogers interview:
"PG: Do you think that in the course of, let's say, an hour-long improvisation there is the potential for a lot of uncreative music?
PR: No, not if you are improvising properly. When you're playing, you can't be thinking about what you are playing - that's too slow. You have to act on the musical elements at that particular time, and do it honestly without ego, playing for the good of the music rather than some self-indulgence. And each person has his own way of doing that; someone might play very little, someone else a lot. But even when silent you should still be in the music. If there are ten people on stage and there is a drum solo, there are ten people involved in the drum solo ... plus the audience. If someone starts talking or goes out of the room the musical dynamics change."

Paul Rogers interview

Paul Rogers interview:
"PG: What music were you listening to at that time?
PR: My older brother would bring records into the house so I heard things like The Who, Jimi Hendrix ... and Cream I really liked at that time. And I'd also heard improvised music on the radio, people like John Stevens, Derek Bailey, etc., and that really turned me on to wanting to play. But I was told that you couldn't play improvised music unless you play jazz. That was the thinking in those days; some people maybe think that now. In fact, some people actually think you improvise because you can't play music! It amazes me how uneducated these people must be because we all know most people only play tunes because they can't improvise, and they play other people's music because they haven't got any of their own! Anyway, I left school shortly before my sixteenth birthday and as there were no options for going to college, etc., I apprenticed as a carpenter for a couple of years before moving to London around 1974."

origins of words and phrases:
"rule of thumb -No, this phrase is definitely NOT 'P.C'! Who knew? 'Rule of thumb' derived from the days when woman were sometimes beaten with a switch. To be 'kind' the switch could not be thicker than a thumb's width. This was made law in 1782 when an English judge stated that men were allowed to beat their wives but that the stick could not be thicker than one's thumb."

Hard to believe that we're talking about wearing high heels, but recent studies reverse the old negative publicity which blasted those staples of everyday women's existence...studies which blamed high heels as a cause of bad posture, stress fractures and other injury. Now they're just the cure for failing sex drives according to a recent study published in the journal, European Urology. And just the cure for admiring men as well as consumer women."

The spirits behind the writers - Los Angeles Times

The spirits behind the writers - Los Angeles Times: " Why do scribblers make drinking their second art? For one thing, it primes them for their task. In 1714, a young Alexander Pope, in an affectionate letter to a lady, began, "Most Divine! -- 'Tis some proof of my sincerity towards you that I write when I am prepared by drinking to speak truth." Keats, in an 1819 letter, described how "ethereal" claret "mounts into the brain" and makes one "a Hermes," god of, among other things, eloquence. "A good sherris-sack," said Falstaff (speaking, no doubt, for Shakespeare himself) "... ascends me into the brain; dries me there all the foolish and dull and crudy vapours which environ it; makes it apprehensive, quick, forgetive, full of nimble, fiery and delectable shapes which, delivered o'er to the voice, the tongue, which is the birth, becomes excellent wit." Well, perhaps."

haven't done much substantial blogging in a while.

going to vote and caucas tomorrow...
think hillary is better on most of the issues,
but not sure she can beat McCain...
still not sure what I'm going to do.

Feeling broken lately -
been on the wrong track
(or some of the wrong tracks)
for maybe a couple of years
and I'm contemplating
some big changes -
gotta do something -
just not sure what yet.
New job?
New city?
Chase a somewhat appropriate woman?
I suppose anything is possible,
although not much is likely...
I guess we'll see.
feeling the disconnect pretty strongly.
at a point in my life where i have alienated
most of the people I've known longest,
and I'm not sure who to talk to,
or even where to start.
so instead of talking - maybe doing
is the key.

politically, we're fairly fucked right now.
the administration is STILL getting
away with damned near everything -
even though shrub's approval is something
like 19%.

I'm still sharing all the stuff I come across
on google reader that makes me want to holler.
it is over to the right.

and yes, i'm already drunk...
$2.50 wells at boondocks every night 5-9.
so three vodkas before dinner = drunk.
and so... i post.

What Was I Thinking?: Books: The New Yorker

What Was I Thinking?: Books: The New Yorker:
"Rational calculators are supposed to consider their options, then pick the one that maximizes the benefit to them. Yet actual economic life, as opposed to the theoretical version, is full of miscalculations, from the gallon jar of mayonnaise purchased at spectacular savings to the billions of dollars Americans will spend this year to service their credit-card debt. The real mystery, it could be argued, isn’t why we make so many poor economic choices but why we persist in accepting economic theory."

exactly. it is hogwash. people are no more rational actors than pigs, maybe less so.

Rot at Super Happy Funland and Yard Sale Benefit!

ROT AT SUPER HAPPY FUNLAND!

Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company and Bobbindoctin Puppet Theatre Present "The Best Original Show in 2007", touring Texas in 2008!The third leg of our tour is February 15 and 16 at Super Happy Funland!

"Rot"

by John Harvey

"..a mini-festival of the willfully weird and woeful." ".. exudes enough despair to make the average Samuel Beckett outing look like Annie." ~Everett Evans , Houston Chronicle

"..the two companies together have created a smart, wildly literary piece of experimental theater the likes of which no Houstonian will see anywhere else this season. " - Lee Williams, Houston Press

Rot won 'Best Original Show' in The Houston Press in 2007 when the two companies collaborated on its premier in 2007. Now, for all of you unfortunate souls who missed it the first time, we are doing a remount of the production for our "Rotten to the Core" tour, beginning at Diverseworks January 17, 18 and 19, 2008, and traveling to other Texas Cities in February and March, such as Rude Mechanicals in Austin, and The Strand Theatre in Galveston.

What is Rot? A by Mildred's Umbrella resident playwright John Harvey. What is Rot? A collaboration between two of Houston's premier theater companies. What is Rot? A husband dying of the plague.
