Songs were meant to have singers, but we never found any...
The "Music for Bathing" track has vocals which makes it as songlike as anything in our catalog...
You'll get points as soon as ya hear 'em...
very process oriented pieces...

Daniel Johnston’s SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE

Daniel Johnston’s SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE

We have the preview tonight and open tomorrow...
but the preview and opening night are sold out.
You want to see this show?
of course you do.
I'd make reservations soon as I expect us to sell out most of the run.

here's more on the show:

Unrequited love is a major theme in the music of Daniel Johnston, a Texas singer-songwriter who is known as much for his erratic behavior over the years as his wonderfully ebullient pop songs. Countless articles and a recent full-length film documentary have recounted his personal demons. Throughout his life, Johnston has channeled his swirling emotions and desires into his music, which bears the mark of his daily struggle. Johnston’s prolific catalogue of songs is one of extremes; it is heavily weighted in both the depths of dejection and ecstatic joy. Recurring characters make appearances: Captain America, the Beatles, Joe the Boxer, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and the Devil.

Somewhere among these sprawling episodes, a narrative was lurking. The recurring episodes told a story about a boy who loved a girl, but everyone knows love can be an earth-shattering emotion, both hellish and heavenly—maybe even literally. In Daniel Johnston’s music, Heaven and Hell are very real places.

The supernatural is a realm quite suited to rock music and live performance. As longtime fans of Johnston’s work, Infernal Bridegroom Productions approached Johnston for the opportunity to set his music to stage and tell his passionate, supernatural love story. “I thought it sounded like a cool idea,” says Johnston, “and then I saw some videos of IBP shows, and my heart jumped for joy, because the shows were really entertaining and really put together well.” With Johnston’s blessing, IBP applied for, and was awarded, a prestigious MAP Fund grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to develop the production. After over a year of development, with Johnston supplying his songs and concepts and IBP founder Jason Nodler arranging the story and providing additional text, Johnston’s hidden narrative is ready to be told. And a tale born of rock music naturally demands the appropriate vessel: a rock opera. Its title, taken from one of Johnston’s songs: Speeding Motorcycle.

Daniel Johnston’s SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE

The Free Press -- Independent News Media - Molly Ivins

The Free Press -- Independent News Media - Molly Ivins: "Naturally, in Texas, National Laboratory for Bad Government, we do it all first and worst. We started with this dandy plan to outsource applications and enrollment for social service programs such as food stamps and Medicaid. In theory, we were to save millions -- though I never could understand it myself. You see, Texas has one of the cheapest state governments on the continent, but when we hire outside contractors, they expect to make a profit. Add profit, add cost. Oh well. "

Molly gets it all right,

Secret rooms, the entire internet? at Pandagon

Secret rooms, the entire internet? at Pandagon:
"But the big news of the day is Wired took the big step and published all the documents from the NSA whistleblower, and with that offered a big, fat fuck you to AT&T and their mewling about keeping secrets while they were invading your privacy. This shit is damning stuff, seriously. Room numbers, photographs of the secret room, detailed descriptions of exactly how the NSA was routing information and rifling through it, the whole banana. It’s tawdry, seriously. There’s so much in here that strikes me as even worse than I imagined."

So, reading all this stuff,
well, it hits me hard,
that maybe
this grand experiment
is over.

Goodnight America,

the original soundtrack:
"Frustrated by this, I put on Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy), and as 'Mother Whale Eyeless' was spinning these lyrics flew out:

'Take me--my little pastry mother take me--there's a pie shop in the sky...'

The proof was in the pudding. The answer was suddenly crystal-clear: I had to see how Eno worked. Not in the studio, but in the kitchen. ("

Why don’t grown-ups believe in Santa Claus? at Pandagon

Why don’t grown-ups believe in Santa Claus? at Pandagon:
"Actually, now that I think about it, there’s really only one real argument for religion, which is social control. The spirituality argument is really the inverse of the “nice soul, be a shame if something happened to it” argument. Hell is coal in your stocking, spiritual bliss in heaven is the new Nintendo system under the tree. Even in real world terms, your spiritual reward that you get belonging to the church is dependent on your compliance to community’s norms. But the post-death promises are important all the same because otherwise you might get the idea that you can have an empowered exchange of good behavior for social acceptance and for some damn reason, that’ll never do."

wait a minute...
there's no santa claus?

Think Progress New Presidential Memorandum Permits Intelligence Director To Authorize Telcos To Lie Without Violating Securities Law

Think Progress New Presidential Memorandum Permits Intelligence Director To Authorize Telcos To Lie Without Violating Securities Law:
"In recent days, AT&T, Bell South and Verizon have all issued statements denying that they’ve handed over phone records to the NSA, as reported by USA today.

There are three possibilities:

1) The USA Today story is inaccurate;

2) The telcos left enough wiggle room in the statements that both the USA Today story and their statements are accurate; or

3) The statements from the telcos are inaccurate.

Ordinarily, a company that conceals their transactions and activities from the public would violate securities law. But an presidential memorandum signed by the President on May 5 allows the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, to authorize a company to conceal activities related to national security. (See 15 U.S.C. 78m(b)(3)(A))"

This is the worst bunch of criminals we've ever had in office...

This Modern World Blog Archive “The Conservative Nanny State” by Dean Baker

This Modern World Blog Archive “The Conservative Nanny State” by Dean Baker:
"For decades the media (and conservatives) have pushed a particular framing of political views on the economy: conservatives favor free market policies, while progressives want the government to intervene in the market. In fact, The Conservative Nanny State explains, this is completely untrue: conservatives are strongly anti-free market. They depend on the government to make the wealthiest people in America even more stupendously rich."

Baker's giving it away as an e-book...
go get it.

I've said again and again if you want to see an example of how the system is rigged you have to look no further than than the way the "free market" handles capital vs. how it handles labor.
Until labor is as free to move across borders and organize itself as capital is all talk of "free markets" is just so much hot air.

The game is rigged.

Beckett Blogging

The Chronicle: 5/12/2006: Happy Days (and Possible Endgames) for Beckett Collections:

"Mr. Knowlson would make frequent trips to Beckett's Paris apartment and return with a briefcase full of manuscripts each time. Among them was an item that Mr. Garforth describes as 'one of the Holy Grails of Beckett studies': the Whoroscope notebook, named after an early poem of Beckett's. It holds jottings from the 1930s in English, French, German, Latin, and Greek on everything from the weight of the Eiffel Tower to musical notations from The Marriage of Figaro.

'It's devastating, the amount of material there,' Mr. Garforth says. 'All sorts of weird and wonderful facts and figures. Sometimes it can be decades later before they surface in another work.'

The notebook, which measures about 4 inches by 6 inches and has a burgundy cloth cover, doesn't leave its special case very often. It accompanied Beckett on an extended German trip in 1936-37. 'It's obviously been in his pocket the six months he traveled around Germany,' the archivist says. 'It looks beautiful. It smells beautiful. You could read it forever and find something new each time you look through it.'"

The more I read of and about the man the more I appreciate where he was coming from...

File Under: Ron is right!

REAL ART (and politics and culture): "Everyone who sees how fucked up things are has a patriotic obligation to rant and rave in people's faces until, well, forever. That's what being an American is all about."

but I wonder what we do when ranting and raving aren't enough? what do we do then? do we rest easy knowing we tried to klang the warning bell? Is voting enough? Is marching? How do we even know when we've reached that point?

1. Not only has someone from Dubai seen my blog,

That rocks.

2. That doing a google search for "bush and the lizard people"

from Oklahoma!!!

3. People in Wisconsin are seaching for the "Married to the Mob" soundtrack.

4. If I wanted to stick to writing about the most popular items on the blog then "this is not a compliment" would soon be nothing but posts about conspiracy theory and Brian Eno.

I am learning so much.

I'm worried...

about the devil.

He's been
a little down.

He shows
no joy in

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.: "It's a frustrating case, where evidence against these boys were literally along the lines 'He reads Stephen King books and wears black.' The whole thing is twisted and one real life horrific figure stands above everybody else by the time you finish Berlinger and Sinofsky's second film... John Mark Byers, step-father to one of the murdered boys. Even if he had nothing to do with the murders of the kids, this man is scarier than any horror icon of the last half century."

The War on Peons Fucking at Pandagon

The War on Peons Fucking at Pandagon: "So there you have it–anti-choicers are anti-sex all right, but they’re also anti-marriage, anti-child and anti-woman in real life terms, not in airy, abstract religious horseshit terms. They want sex to be a point of tension, not joy, in couples’ lives. They want children to be so numerous they can’t be cared for properly. And they want women to be resigned to a choice between being treated like whores or treated like incubators. The religious nuts in the anti-choice movement are deeply un-Christian, siding with the powerful against the weak, accepting whole-heartedly the idea that happy coupling and sexual pleasure should be privileges granted only to the wealthy."

yes! yes! yes! the anti-choice movement is anti-women and anti-sex. So maybe some of my friends are right that "keep your laws off my body!" isn't the right approach, but when you are in a battle for control over half the human race why pretend it's a battle over something else? The bad guys need to pretend it's about "the culture of life" because if they said it's really about control, they'd lose. We can only profit by pointing out the reality of the debate.

Daily Kos: May 5th, 1886 - Rounding up the Haymarket martyrs: "Parsons believed that the voice of the people was more powerful than the voice of the corrupt establishment. He feared not because he was sure that there would be many more leaders to take his place.

The execution of the Haymarket martyrs effectively stalled the American labor movement for decades.

Moreover, their memories were erased from the history books. Parsons et al are barely footnotes in American history."

Here and There Blog Archive Daniel and Me

Here and There Blog Archive Daniel and Me: "From there, it was hearing bits and pieces…Austin lore. This “crazy guy” Daniel Johnston, who made these tapes and sold them at Sound Exchange or bartered them for comics or music. I never got to hear the tapes, mostly out of my own laziness. But I was also in the early stages of a vinyl addiction that, thankfully, has receded. Tapes were out of the question."

Daniel's Visual Art

the aquarium - now on: "Daniel Johnston is a visionary artist whose work in both music and visual art has made him a cult legend. Despite being better known for his heartrendingly honest songs that tell tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps and existential torment, Daniel did in fact study art and his work is currently on show at the Whitney Biennial, New York. This, along with a major feature on Daniel’s visual art in the New York Times newspaper, marks a shift from his underground status to a wider acceptance in the fine art world, but we won’t let that get in the way of a show at The Aquarium. We are delighted to have an artist of such creative fervour and inspirational talent joining our ranks of other art desperadoes. Chiefly - James Cauty, Billy Childish, Sexton Ming, Jamie Reid and STOT21stCplanB."

SHEEPSHANK: chance meeting of the year...: "this one is a 'lil bit melancholy. been listening to the great DANIEL JOHNSTON lately. he always put me there...

back in late '03, i had a damn near complete nervous breakdown. 'near' complete cause i'm sitting here alive and typing this today. was having many problems and my relationship at the time was going less than swimmingly. so, one particularly miserable day, after a hard 10 spent giving 90 minute narrated historical tours to the obnoxious denizens of clueless walking checkbooks known as tourists (nothing against all tourists, but i met a lot of dicks,) i hit the KHYBER, downed a dozen shots of bourbon plus countless beers under the company of ultra kind barman and local underground cartoonist 'flip,' bounced into a tattoo shop and plunked down $100 clams to get my lady's name in a heart inked on my right wrist, went back to the bar for a few more, and staggered home over the crunching leaves of the booze soaked autumn twilight to tell her that i was too crazy for our relationship to work and that we were through. Platitudes and Plutocrats: Hanging upside down inside of a pop song:

"I listen to the Silver Jews and go, oooh, ah, someone jabs a fork in my guts and unzips the front of my skull. I listen to Daniel Johnston and fall over my typewriter into a dried up well. I listen to my old albums and am transplanted in time and space. Bob Dylan to a friend's bedroom at fourteen."

Nothing: Daniel Johnston Friday 14th April - Barbican London

Nothing: Daniel Johnston Friday 14th April - Barbican London: "Then it's Jason Pierce from
Spiritualised.
He seems reverential in regards to Daniel's songs, and performs 'True Love Will Find You in the End',
and 'Funeral Home'. The string quartet and gospel backing singers are a touch too much, the tenuous nature of the songs are rendered
bloated and overblown. The words 'Funeral Home' are repeated ad infinitum to tedium.
Then as the stage is emptied it's the moment we've all been built up for, the Brian Wilson-like, mad, obsessive songwriting
genius - Daniel Johnston. "

Look forward to lots and lots of Daniel blogging as the "Speeding Motorcycle" approaches...

The Chronicle: 4/7/2006: Dancers as Living Archives: "There are other ways of preserving the most ephemeral of the arts: film, video, various forms of notation; the visual record provided by painting, sculpture, and photography; sometimes written accounts. But whether a work's vocabulary is the flexed feet and filigreed hand gestures of South Asian dance, the straight spines and pointed toes of classical ballet, the contracted pelvis and floorbound movement of traditional modern dance, or the arm-swinging walking and running of postmodernism, there is no more viable way to transmit it than dancer to dancer."

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.: "From executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick ('Battlestar Galactica'), writer Remi Aubuchon ('24') and NBC Universal Television Studio, this new series is set over a half a century before the events that play out in 'Battlestar Galactica.' The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot - a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the 'Battlestar Galactica') 'Caprica' weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga."
It looks like the sci-fi channel has a whole lot of interesting things coming up, but if they cast "Caprica" as well as they did "Battlestar Galactica" they'll likely own the two best hours in television from week to week.

Horkheimer, Adorno, and The World's Greatest Comic Magazine

Motime Like the Present:
"The Bakhtinian carnival within the lettercols finally spilled over into the main feature in early 1963. The cover of FF #10 depicts the artist and scripter standing with their backs to the reader, marvelling at the raucous situation they’ve concocted this month. An arrow-shaped blurb drives home the point, announcing: “In this epic issue: surprise follows surprise as you actually meet Lee and Kirby in the story!!” The much-anticipated event comes to pass on page 5, which shows the pair in their Marvel office, surrounded by images of the company’s other properties and sacks labelled “fan mail”. The diegetic Lee and Kirby agonize over their incapacity to create a more interesting villain than Dr. Doom, a character they regret exiling to space in a previous issue (a footnote—the first of its kind, and destined to become a trademark aspect of Marvel continuity-consciousness—reminds the reader that this event occurred in issue #6). Their problem is solved when Doom himself wanders onto the scene, barking: “you are searching for a story—well, I shall give you one! Here, phone Mr. Fantastic—say what I tell you if you value your lives” (FF #10, 5). Naturally, they do, and the rematch proceeds apace."

Scholars Discover 23 Blank Pages That May As Well Be Lost Samuel Beckett Play | The Onion - America's Finest News Source: "The 23 blank pages, which literary experts presume is a two-act play composed sometime between 1973 and 1975, are already being heralded as one of the most ambitious works by the Nobel Prize-winning author of Waiting For Godot, and a natural progression from his earlier works, including 1969's Breath, a 30-second play with no characters, and 1972's Not I, in which the only illuminated part of the stage is a floating mouth."

Good News! The Rich Get Richer

Good News! The Rich Get Richer:
"There are, of course, obvious reasons the majority of Americans dissent from the White House’s rosy presentation of the economy: Most American households are not, in fact, seeing their economic fortunes improve. GDP is up, but virtually all the growth has gone into corporate profits and the incomes of the highest economic brackets. Wages and incomes for average workers, adjusted for inflation, are down in recent years; the median income for non-elderly households is down 4.8 percent since 2000 (Economic Policy Institute, 8/31/05). The poverty rate is rising, as is the number of people in debt.

But rather than confront these realities, and explore the implications of the White House’s efforts to deny them, most mainstream media instead assisted the Bush team’s PR by themselves feigning confusion over the gap between the official view and the public mood."

For The Linus Pauling Quartet it's all about the process...Linus Pauling Quartet Blog: Another fascinating intellectual discussion by the LP4...: "Charlie:

How do YOU know there are no sword metal pirates? I mean, we can probably all agree there are no sword metal astronauts or sword metal traffic cops, but no sword metal pirates? What were the damn Vikings??

Ramon:

Dude Vikings are not Pirates. Pirates are hoods who sail along the warm Caribbean drinking rum. Now while I will admit that's pretty frikkin cool, Vikings come from the Dark and frigid coasts of Scandinavia where they would probably kick anyone’s ass just because there is nothing else to do but kick someone’s ass when you come from the dark and frigid coasts of Scandinavia. If a pirate dies, he doesn't get to go to Valhalla he goes to Davy Jones' Locker. A hall of mead drinking warriors is cooler than any locker I saw in high school. But most important of all for the sword metal tradition - while Pirates probably would get hotter chicks they were also a lot gayer.

Clinton:

I would only partly disagree: though Vikings engaged in behaviour that was undeniably piratical (such as sailing into France or England, carrying off women and food and gold, etc.), and therefore should be considered pirates, they are a special sub-class of pirates. Pirates, I don't think, are worthy alone of Sword Metal, whereas Vikings clearly are.

I challenge each of you to come up with your Icelandic Saga name by the end of this day, and you will henceforth refer to me as Clinton 'Helmsplitter' Heider."

The Ultimate Fighting Anarchist -- In These Times

The Ultimate Fighting Anarchist -- In These Times: "“I’m not some sort of conspiracy theorist,” Monson says of his political leanings. “I’m not talking about how the government is trying to hide UFOs. I just want to do away with hierarchy. I’m saying that our economic system, capitalism, is structured so that it only benefits a small percentage of very wealthy people. When I was traveling in Brazil, they had us staying at a really posh hotel. Outside the hotel there was a mom sleeping on the sidewalk with her two kids. That’s when reality hits you. What did that woman ever do? Who did she ever hurt?”

Monson wears his politics on his sleeve, as well as the rest of his body. An anarcho-syndicalist star is tattooed on his chest, an anarchy sign on his back and another “A” on his leg. While he loves his sport, he also feels a responsibility to use whatever exposure he receives for a larger purpose. “I don’t think I’m more important than anyone else, but since some people are paying attention, then I’m going to use this as a vehicle to express myself,” he says. Some fans have labeled him anti-American, but he shrugs off such criticism. He was slightly taken aback, however, when three Secret Service agents showed up at his gym in Olympia, Wash., last fall."

The Stanford Prison Experiment: A Simulation Study of the Psychology of Imprisonment:

"How we went about testing these questions and what we found may astound you. Our planned two-week investigation into the psychology of prison life had to be ended prematurely after only six days because of what the situation was doing to the college students who participated. In only a few days, our guards became sadistic and our prisoners became depressed and showed signs of extreme stress. "

went and read up on the Stanford Prison Experiment after watching the documentary "Obedience" - the film Milgram made of his classic "shock the man to death" experiments...

And then there's Peter Gabriel's 1986 song We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37). I'll stop there, but trust me - there's more.

With so much dreck inspired by what was possibly the greatest social psychology experiment of all time, it's no surprise that Milgram's own 1965 documentary Obedience was lost in the shuffle."

Come to the Parade!

I'm not just in rehearsal for "Speeding Motorcycle" right now...
I'm also rehearsin a show that can only be described as "bad-ass theatre".
That's right kids! The BLP is back! with "ASSHOLE PARADE!"

If I had to describe it I'd say I already said, "It can only be described as 'Bad-Ass Theatre'" but if you needed more I might say, "it's something like Adult Swim meets Hee-Haw...
but really it's so much more...
(and less, I mean it's not animated and does not feature Buck Owens,
but there is singin and dancin and actin and all that fancy theatre stuff
except without the stuff that sucks except for the parts that might suck,
but I don't think there'll be many, mostly I think it'll rock...
whatta you think?)"

so, anyway, the official line is:

A marching band comes to town and people have emotions.

so, yeah, there's that, but, wow, there's like so much, ya know? ya know?
of course ya don't know...
but you will

What this means is that we've got $20-million houses offering spectacular views down the hill and into the Third World. If not for the fact that it takes forever to get anywhere on the bus, we'd have a revolution on our hands.

So the question I've been asking public officials and civic leaders is what we can do about the income gap that runs like a fault line through the land, dividing the haves from the help."

Theatreport.com- Theatre in Houston, Tx - Forum - General Discussion - Theatre Odin Notes: "We each are responsible for cleaning one part of the theatre. I mention this over and over, because it is the single most transformingly binding force I have encountered. To make a theatre belong to someone, give it to them. Make it their own. Even if it is only the stairs, as I had during Odin Week. Or the library/dining room, as I have now. Every wood floor in this theatre is clean enough to eat off."

[sic] - pay what you will performance Monday night

Hey all...
this is the show I did sound design for...
Monday is another pay what you will performance.
Read the Press review below, then go see it...
really.
you won't regret it.

Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company presents [sic] by Melissa James Gibson.
The show is running now through April 15 on Friday and Saturday nights @ 8pm.  Tickets are only $10!  There is a special pay-what-you-want performance THIS MONDAY, APRIL 10 @ 8pm.
The show is at Midtown Art Center, 3414 LaBranch at Holman.  Please email mildredsumbrella@hotmail.com for more info or to make reservations...seating is limited!

Check out what the Houston Press has to say:

[sic] In the old days, Melissa James Gibson's comedy of manners would've been called experimental and avant-garde because of its overlapping dialogue, non sequiturs, intimate asides to the audience, flaccid plotline, linguistic flourishes, time bends and slacker characters not knowing which way to turn. It's still that -- the play's even written without punctuation -- but the old-hat unconventionality of its literary pretensions seems fresh and breezy in Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company's winsome production. Three loser friends live next door to one another on the third floor of a ratty apartment building in a nameless big city. These empathetic sad sacks, whose failures are ingrained within them, are joined at the soul; they're thirtysomethings who can't make anything work in their lives. Their constant bickering, teasing and dreaming only draw them more tightly together. Pining for what they can't have, they feed off one another. Hack musician Theo (Eric Doss) stumbles over composing a theme song for the Thrill-A-Rama ride at the amusement park; overly analytical writer Babette (Jennifer Decker) can't finish her magnum opus of "20th-century outbursts"; gay Frank (Alan Hall) obsesses over his ex-boyfriend, who introduced the three to one another, and practices to be an auctioneer by reciting tongue-twisters. Adding to the enchanting disenchantment of their lives are the disembodied angry voices rising from the air shaft and the surprisingly frisky -- and also unseen -- Mrs. Jorgensen down the hall, who may be dead, sleeping or sleeping around. This clever, brainy, constantly amusing play, superbly acted and gracefully directed by Michelle Edwards, may be about failure and dashed hopes, but it succeeds like gangbusters. Through April 15. Midtown Art Center, 3414 La Branch, 832-418-0973.

Websnark: Why do we keep talking about the Great Outdoor Fight? Because it's *good.*: "Ray Smuckles, in September of last year, was a coward who would desert a dying man. He had sought his father and found him. But more to the point, he had sought something in himself. And now, he was confronted with destruction if he didn't do what was expected. Beef, who had guided and encouraged and enabled him, was helpless. Terrified. His father, who was his inspiration, had nothing to help him."

Love American Style:

You're an anomaly
that's a thing without a name
you're worming it out of me
and this worm you cannot change

I want to drive you up the wall
I want to treat you like a doll
I want to write it out in blood
I want an oriental rug

on a star spangled night my love
you can rest your head on my shoulder
and by the dawn's early light my love
I will defend your right to cry

I want to be there at your trial
I want a Love American Style
cause I'm a former young american
and I don't know if it's real or re-run
there's something you ought to know
before you think you understand
I'm invisible and I've got a robot friend
I want to tie you to a post
I want to make you tea and toast
I want to be there at your trial
I want a love american style.

Ask a Hill Staffer: Hagiographic Content - Wonkette

Ask a Hill Staffer: Hagiographic Content - Wonkette: "If you could paint a mural on one of the Capitol walls, what would you paint?

I would paint a mural of Ronald Reagan, because he doesn’t have enough shit in his honor around Washington. The Capitol would make the perfect place for a new memorial to our 40th President. I’d paint it of his life: the son of a hard working New Deal union man who grows up to become President of the SAG. This would segue into the part of his life where he stabs his fellow union members in the back by negotiating sweetheart deals with the mob and outing the Communists. His dad would be watching in the background with an “I€™m disappointed in you, son,” look. You know, like when your dad doesn€™t yell but makes you feel really bad? And then, I would move on to the part where he divorces his first wife and estranges himself from his kids. Oh yeah, then on to the part where he marries Nancy so he can run for office. I would end it with him going batshit insane with Alzheimer’s and Nancy ironically lobbying the Republican party that he built to allow for more embryonic stem-cell research. But don’t worry, the lobbying would be interpretive so as not to be offensive. And Reagan would be smiling. How much room do I have for this mural? I forgot Iran-Contra!"

If I win the lottery I'm paying someone to paint this.

Lance Mannion

Lance Mannion: "Most people, to get back to my original point, change their sleep patterns during adolescence, because of the simple fact that teenage bodies and brains are growing and changing wildly and the whole process is mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausting.

Everybody knows this.

Everybody except, apparently, school administrators who schedule their districts' school days exactly as if the opposite was true, starting their high schools' days at the crack of a winter dawn. There is absolutely no good reason for this."

Ken-Welch.Com - Russian Nuke Traced to Texas: "
During the summer of 2005 it was decided go ahead with plans for America’s second 9/11.

The decision was not made in a torch-lit cave in Afghanistan, nor in a nondescript safe-house in Iraq. Implementing the plan would involve the highest officials of the United States government. The centerpiece of the plan is a portable nuclear weapon manufactured in the former Soviet Union. A tame “terrorist”, destined no doubt to be an eventual patsy, arranged for the bomb’s transport by sea, and the ship carrying it entered Galveston Bay on January 25, 2006. At this time the device remains hidden on board the ship that brought it, a freighter docked in or near the port of Texas City, about thirty minutes south of Houston, and only ten miles from the island city of Galveston."

by Melissa James Gibson

Three young urban failures navigate the slippery allegiances of their triangular friendship. Babette , a frustrated editor; Theo, a terribly blocked, classically-trained composer; and Frank, an aspiring but tongue-tied auctioneer, share a world of quicksand needs and fickle urges, where a vast landscape exists between what is intended and what is construed, and where ordering Chinese food is a deeply personal matter.

Mildred's Umbrella is right at home with Melissa James Gibson's [Sic] , winner of an OBIE Award and the Kesserling Prize, with its quirky, off-beat script full of wordplay and oddball characters.

Directed by Michelle Edwards and featuring Alan Hall, Eric Doss, and Jennifer Decker, [Sic] opens March 24, 2006 and runs through April 15, each Friday and Saturday, as well as two “pay as you like” Monday shows, March 27 and April 10. All shows are at 8pm .

Interview with Philip K. Dick

Interview with Philip K. Dick:
"I believe that the establishment churches have lost the keys to the kingdom. They don't even know what the Kingdom of God is.

It's like some guy who loses the keys to his car. He knows he had them a second ago but now they're gone. The churches, however, don't even know what the car looks like anymore. They can't even give a description of it to the cop.

Organized religion is crooked, dumb, and it's lost the keys. I mean, it's OK to be crooked and dumb, we're all crooked and dumb. But the tragedy is that they've lost the keys. They can't even point us in the right direction much less take us there."

HERMENAUT: Philip K. Dick (1928-1982)

HERMENAUT: Philip K. Dick (1928-1982):
"Also that year, the scholarly journal Science-Fiction Studies published a special issue devoted to his work; full of New Left and neo-Marxist analyses of Dick's Laingian, existentialist, and anti-capitalist themes, it provoked even more unwelcome visits from French intellectuals-whom he drove away by blasting Linda Ronstadt at top volume, and whose words of praise he invariably reported to the authorities."

The Defenestration Unit - March 31 - Brasil - and, oh yeah, it's my birthday...

March 31 around 9:30 or so
The Defenestration Unit
Cafe Brasil (Westheimer and Dunlavy)

it's free.

TDU is currently, mostly, kinda:

Bill Savoie - Drums
Jeff Miller - Bass
Jim Otterson - Guitar
Ryan Goodland - Keyboard, Trumpet, Bass
Tom Zermeno - Percussion
Charlie Naked - Saxophones, whistles, etc.
Mike Switzer - Trombones

I think Candace V. might be sitting in for  a bit after midnight,
and who knows who else might show up and join in...

Welcome Jeff Miller to TDU!
He's the new guy on bass...
Mathlete left and Miller stepped in...
I think he's still figuring out exactly what he's stepped in,
but so far there's been no effort to wipe it off his shoes...

In the finest TDU tradition Ryan Goodland
will be going on hiatus after this show,
so this might well be the one show with
this particular group...who knows?
anyway, we're pretty damn good at the moment,
if I do say so myself...and I do.
So, come see the show,
and oh yeah, you can wish me a happy birthday too,
since I'll be turning 36 that night...
whoohooo!

BBC NEWS | Americas | US 'Zombie party' killings probed

BBC NEWS | Americas | US 'Zombie party' killings probed: "They were killed, and two others wounded, when a fellow guest went on a gun rampage before finally killing himself when confronted by police.

They were at a 'zombie party', where guests wear make-up to make them look dead, in the city's Capitol Hill area."

Look, who thought a "zombie" party was a good idea to begin with? isn't that just asking for trouble?

Adult Webmaster Resources, Articles, News, Help Guides, Sites

Adult Webmaster Resources, Articles, News, Help Guides, Sites: "Maybe that's why you chose to escape the rat race and become an adult webmaster. You realized that we're in an age where dependable jobs are almost legend. Many of you became proficient on computers only to discover that your skills aren't needed thanks to the wonderful concept of outsourcing. Could be, you just wanted your destiny back. You decided to claim your piece of the future and you chose one of the only products in existence that hasn't (and hopefully won't ever) become obsolete: Porn."

The first few paragraphs in this article are about "the adding machine"...
really.

Art in Real-Time: Theatre and Virtual Reality

Art in Real-Time: Theatre and Virtual Reality: "One of the first scenes to ever be staged with VR technology remains one of the best examples of its potential; scene 2, in which Zero is fired by his boss. At the beginning of this scene, the characters of Zero and Daisy are working at the office, Daisy reading numbers wile Zero adds them. Behind them is a representation of the office and what appears to be the actors’ shadows on the screen. As Zero and Daisy grow weary of the monotonous task and begin to daydream, the actors leave their positions and. move about the stage while speaking their dream monologues. However, the shadows remain in their original positions. This effect was used to visually demonstrate that the characters have not actually left their work and the movement of the actors is only psychological. At the same time the virtual office is moved into the far background as another sigh that the character’s minds have traveled far from their jobs. Later in the scene Zero interacts with his Boss, portrayed by an actor who performs off-stage in front of a video camera. The video image of the boss was then superimposed into the computer generated office. By zooming the camera, the boss was be made to 'grow' during the scene appearing larger as he becomes more of a threat to Zero. In the end, the Boss fires Zero and his laughing face fills the entire screen. "

Bill Hicks Historic Track Found & It’s Free - RINF Alternative News

Bill Hicks Historic Track Found & It’s Free - RINF Alternative News: "Free Download of the first Bill Hicks post-Letterman audio recording that’s surfaced after 13 years. A few days after being censored from David Letterman, Bill Hicks did a few shows around NYC ranting harder than ever before. Bill was terminally sick and knew it, but never shared this outside his family and closest friends. These shows have long been thought uncaptured. This last week, one of these shows has emerged…dated 10/5/93."

I'm downloading it now...
can't wait to hear it.

drunk blogging

not even last call
wondering what
why and where
and everyone I know is crazy
spent more on whiskey
in the last two days than
I've spent on groceries
in a month
if I see the light
at the end of the tunnel
it's cause I can see
the end of the tunnel
and I ain't so sure
that's good
so for what it's worth
I do what I can
and I try
to do it right
but till these particular
clouds lift
it's all I can do
to lift my head
so if I manage a smile
try not to judge
too harsh
it really don't
mean so much
it's just that
sometimes maybe
I'm not so quite
out of touch
no reason to
get out of bed
till the sun goes
down
we'll see
how it all turns out

show I did sound design for opening
Friday...
