Guardian Unlimited Books | By genre | Happiness is always a delusion

here's a few quotes:

I don't want happiness to be part of the currency," he sighs, "but by that I don't mean that I want people to be miserable, but I do think that if you have a sense of reality you are going to be really troubled. Anybody in this culture who watches the news and can be happy - there's something wrong with them.

You're supposed to go: 'Happiness! Yes, that's all I want!' But what about justice or reality or ruthlessness - or whatever my preferred thing is?"

There is a presumption that there is a weakness in the people who are depressed or a weakness on the part of scientific research and one of these two groups has got to pull its socks up. Scientists have got to get better and find us a drug and the depressed have got to stop malingering. The ethos is: 'Actually life is wonderful, great - get out there!' That's totally unrealistic and it's bound to fail."

"Sanity involves learning to enjoy conflict, and giving up on all myths of harmony, consistency and redemption."

"Freudian psychoanalysis suggests that there is something over and above this. These are parts of ourselves - that don't want to live, that hate our children, that want ourselves to fail. Freud is saying there is something strange about humans: they are recalcitrant to what is supposed to be their project. That seems to me to be persuasive." It also, you might notice, suggests humans have a design flaw.

KERBLOG: still alive and well and living in beirut:

"'anyways, music and drawing are the only things keeping me going these days.
i recorded two hours of bombs trumpet from my balcony yesterday night.
some bombs were really close (what kind of mouthpiece do the israeli pilots use to have this sound?). the tension you get in your playing is incredible. also, i draw all time.
i always said that i regret not being adult during the war to see if you can
do something in these situations. now i feel bad to draw or play music while
people are burning. i convince myself by saying it is my only way to resist. that i have to witness. that it is very important.
but i am not really convinced. i try to be a fucking witness. to show a
little bit what's happening here. in my own way. but having regards for what
is a good drawing or a good music track drives me crazy. i cannot stop
saying after a bomb: 'yeah, this one was huge. i'll leave a long silence
then make a small sound to balance the track.' this is totally crazy!'

Doom Patrol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Doom Patrol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"In Morrison's final storyline, it was revealed that the Chief had caused the 'accidents' which turned Cliff, Larry Trainor and Rita Farr into freaks with the express intention of creating the Doom Patrol. He also unleashed nanobots into the world, hoping to create a catastrophe which would make the world a stranger and more wonderful place. However, Caulder did not anticipate being decapitated by the Candlemaker."

Here's what I don't understand...
at the end of this new teen titans issue, the doom patrol learns the chief created them, intentionally caused the "accidents" which made them into tortured heroes, and they don't kill him, imprison him, or even beat the crap out of him... They make him not the boss anymore, and Changeling says something like, "I think he means well." - fuck that. Man's a super-villian plain and simple and he needs to be stopped before he makes more self-pitying monsters, right? Somebody makes me a robot against my will they're getting their head bashed in... that's all I'm sayin'.

Guardian Unlimited Books | Review | HP Lovecraft by Michel Houellebecq

Guardian Unlimited Books | Review | HP Lovecraft by Michel Houellebecq:

Why read Lovecraft?

"Life is painful and disappointing. It is useless, therefore, to write new, realistic novels. We generally know where we stand in relation to reality and don't care to know any more. Humanity, such as it is, inspires only an attenuated curiosity in us. All those prodigiously refined notations, situations, anecdotes ... All they do, once a book has been set aside, is reinforce the slight revulsion that is already adequately nourished by any one of our 'real life' days."

The Seattle Times: Living: Curses! We seem to be turning into a pack of potty-mouths:

"'People are using [profanity] in completely neutral and surprising situations,' said John Singler, a professor of linguistics at New York University. 'There's no taboo there.'"

Profanity shifts...
there were times when words like, "Swell!" were considered indecent for mixed company... I would argue if "there's no taboo there" then it ain't profanity.

"'The English language isn't used to its full extent and purpose," she said. "There are plenty of explanatory words that can be used instead of swearing. So why not use those?'"

uhm, why use those? why not use either, or both? why not say what you mean? even if it is just, "shut your fuckin' mouth before I shove my fist down your fuckin' throat." - tell me how to express that idea with the same intensity without the swears...

anyone who watches "Deadwood" will grow to understand the poetry of "cocksucker"...

that is all.

The chickens coming home to roost where they're told

REAL ART (and politics and culture):

"Kids spend, if you include kindergarten, thirteen years in an artificially created social situation that is utterly heirarchical and authority laden before they are unleashed on the greater society. Their entire days are strictly structured and organized; there are rules out the wazoo, and rigid consequences for their violation. There are punishments and rewards, in the form of grades and institutional acceptance or rejection, for the often meaningless tasks known more popularly as 'assignments.' Bullying and social elitism among students is not only tolerated but often actively encouraged by teachers, administrators, and coaches. Keep in mind that children are immersed in this environment for thirteen of the most formative years of their lives. They may know their multiplication tables and the preamble to the Constitution when they graduate, but they know much better that there are rewards for people who get with the system, and punishments for people who don't."

maybe home schooling isn't such a bad idea...

"Western Martial Arts Styles at Catholic Academy of Sacramental Combat Arts"

"Western Martial Arts Styles at Catholic Academy of Sacramental Combat Arts": "# You teach grappling and weapons, but so do Asian martial arts. What makes your perspective unique?

A: What makes our style unique is the distinctive Christian spirituality involved in our martial arts. Parents of Christians don't have to shuffle through the various pagan philosophies to discern which is consistent with orthodox Christian doctrine, and which is not.

# If that is the case, how does this differ from Christian karate?

A: Christian karate removes non-Christian philosophy from karate, and replaces it with Christian philosophy. C.A.S.C.A. uses martial arts that either go back to Biblical times, or were developed during Europe's Catholic era, when religious knightly orders were thoroughly permeated by Christian philosophy. Therefore, instead of adapting a non-Christian martial art to Christian use, C.A.S.C.A. maintains a historical link to Catholic spirituality and combat systems."

"It's a great album, especially the big rave-up Interstellar Overdrive. But it's only in Bike, the strange closing number, which seems to wander off and never quite come back, that we get the first intimation of Syd Barrett, sui generis. His voice was strange, thin, reedy, capable of leaping awkwardly high, and of ominous basso rumblings. His guitar playing was trebly, raga-influenced, more like Eric Dolphy than Eric Clapton."

please help spread far and wide....

<BEGIN PRESS RELEASE>

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE * 7/10/2006*

ELMER RICE’S

THE ADDING MACHINE

A Kid Ornery Production

In association with the Federal Entertainment Authority

Under special arrangement with the Samuel French Company

http://www.myspace.com/theaddingmachine

call 832-725-4109 for reservations or more information.

WHEN: 8pm Fridays and Saturdays, July 21,22,28,29, 2006, with a special ‘pay what you will’ performance Monday July 24.

WHERE: FrenetiCore Theater, located at 5102 Navigation, in Houston’s hyperfunky East End.

HOW MUCH: $10 all seats, all shows, except for Monday July 24, when your conscience decides the price.

AND WHY: Because producer and director Mike Switzer did a lot of unassigned reading at his university…

THE PLAY

Serendipity and Switzer's habit of browsing obscure play scripts at the University of Houston library yielded pay dirt when his fingers brushed across an old edition of Elmer Rice's THE ADDING MACHINE.

"I fell in love with its language, its humor and its

bleakness," says Switzer. A graduate of the school of philosophy, Switzer's lack of drama major acquaintances (back then, anyway) meant that he had "no idea it was a produced or even a known play," let alone one of the premiere examples of U.S. expressionism and a deep influence on all following American theatre. (It was for instance a known and deep influence on Tennessee Williams’ Stairs to the Roof.)

IN 1923, when Elmer Rice was writing THE ADDING MACHINE, a computer was not a machine but a person, tabulating columns of figures – one human cell in a preelectronic spreadsheet program.

The play’s antihero is one such nullity – Mr. Zero, twenty-five years a cog in the financial machinery at a massive department store. Zero snaps when he’s suddenly fired and replaced by a machine –"Does the work in half the time and a high school girl can operate them," says the Boss.

Mechanization, isolation, the grim logic of an efficient market, anomie compressed until blazing out into homicidal rage – THE ADDING MACHINE addressed issues already making headlines in the Jazz Age and even more relevant now.

WHO’S DOING THIS

THE ADDING MACHINE is the first ride out of the chute for Kid Ornery Productions but it’s far from the first time at the rodeo for producer/director Mike Switzer.

Most recently seen in Infernal Bridegroom Production’s Speeding Motorcycle, Switzer has acted with Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theater, Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company, Dos Chicas Theater Commune, SLUMP, the Brazosport Little Players and, under the nom de horn Kid Ornery, blew a mean trombone in the Federal Entertainment Authority’s series of cabarets. His double life as a musician in Houston’s avant-noise scene includes long stints in The Defenestration Unit and in his decade-long, two-man project with Charlie Naked, the Last Bastions, whose installation/performance Houston – A Meditation premiered at DiverseWorks in 2005.

Naked is music director for TAM and will be working from both musical and extra-musical themes and ideas to create a highly improvisational score for the show, different each performance.

The band includes members of The Linus Pauling Quartet,

Free Radicals, Friendship Bracelets, The Defenestration Unit, and Infant Mortality Rate. Featuring the sounds

of the theremin, cello, saxophone, in addition to your

more typical bass, guitar, and drums they have created

a beautiful, tension-filled, and at times disturbing score.

The cast is a mix of grizzled veterans and naifs and include members of the Dos Chicas, Theatre Illuminata, Mildred’s Umbrella, and other Houston theater outfits.

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS, MR SWITZER?

Why, yes. THE ADDING MACHINE's reputation as a challenging

play to produce has led to what Switzer describes as an

unsettling phenomenon. "I have hated how many people have

come up to me and said, 'wow, you're taking on a really…

ambitious project,'" he says.

Ambitious it is, but well worth your time and attention. Oh, and money.

ONCE AGAIN:

The host pretty much hated all the music and didn't get it at all...but they talk about the music for a bit, and it is very entertaining...and I'm talking to the guy in his comments, so at least there's some dialogue happening...

anyway, you should give it a listen as it is entertaining,
and some of the other podcasts reviewed sound like they might be good.

REAL ART (and politics and culture)

Joan Jett is back...
FOR REAL!

REAL ART (and politics and culture):
"Her new song, 'ACDC,' and, yes, it is about bisexuality, but not hers, seems to wipe away the shy act. And it's a fucking great tune; gone is the absurd late 80s heavy metal production style she used for a while on songs like 'I Hate Myself for Loving You,' which is still pretty good in spite of the hairspray: this new tune goes back to the classic Blackhearts hard rock sound that I grooved to when I was in the eighth grade."

This song truly rocks...
it's been a while Joan -
Thanks.

Kid Ornery presents... William Switzer - The Final Solo Recordings

William Switzer was Jason Bill and Mike Switzer (Kid Ornery's given name).
We released one CD - The Illusion of Technique - on Fleece Records...
The critics, well, they mostly ignored it, but some, well, some hated it.
The girl I dated for a brief period after we recorded it asked if we were depressed at the time, and if we were listening to what we were doing...
and of course we think it's a fun record, and we were listening as closely as either of us were capable of at the time...
This is our last duo session - probably recorded at the Charalambihouse.
I also have unreleased trio sessions with Dave Dove, and Heather Murray.
Just got a call from a friend saying that Christina Carter will be on the next DJ Shadow record...
crazy...
I need to see if I can contact her about releasing some of the CCM recordings - Christina Carter, Charlie Naked, Mike Switzer - some of her earliest piano work and all kinds of interesting noises.
But anyway, back to William Switzer...
We were awesome and sometimes unlistenable...but mostly awesome.
Jason went on to record with Jack Rose and Migrantes...
I went on to do all the crazy stuff you've been listening to on previous eps of this podcast...
and now - I'm directing a play - http://www.myspace.com/theaddingmachine
and Charlie Naked along with members of TDU, Free Radicals, Infant Mortality Rate and Friendship Bracelets (among others) are making the music for the show...
should be amazing...
blah blah blah...

Ken Lay, Enron founder, dead at 64 - Jul. 5, 2006

Ken Lay, Enron founder, dead at 64 - Jul. 5, 2006: "NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Enron founder Kenneth Lay died early Wednesday in Aspen, Colo., a family spokeswoman said.

Lay, 64, was awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of conspiracy and fraud in the Enron trial in May.

In a statement, spokeswoman Kelly Kimberly said, 'The Lays have a very large family with whom they need to communicate, and out of respect for the family we will release further details at a later time.'

A spokeswoman for Aspen Valley Hospital confirmed that Lay arrived at the hospital at 1:41 a.m. MT and was pronounced dead at 3:11 a.m. MT.

CNN affiliate KPRC in Houston said Lay was admitted to the hospital with a massive coronary.

In a statement, the Pitkin County Sheriff's office said a coroner's autopsy is pending and autopsy results will be available later this week."

happy 4th

Professor Griff:
They claim we’re products from the bottom of hell,
‘Cause the black is back and it’s bound to sell.
Picture us coolin’ out on the fourth of July,
And if you heard we were celebrating that’s a world wide lie!
Yo Chuck!
The fed-dead-arals, man, trying to pull a 2-2-6 on ya G,
Yo man,
Show ‘em what you got!
Sh-Show ‘em what you got!

Chuck D:
This style seems wild.
Wait before you treat me like a stepchild!
Let me tell you why they got me on file,
‘Cause I give you what you lack,
Come right and exact,
Our status is the saddest,
So I care where you at, black!
And at home I got a call from Tony Rome,
The FBI was tappin’ my telephone.
I never live alone.
I never walk alone.
My posses always ready, and they’re waitin’ in my zone.
Although I live the life that of a resident,
But I be knowin’ the scheme that of the president,
Tappin’ my phone whose crews abused,
I stand accused of doing harm.
‘Cause I’m louder than a bomb.

C’mon, C’mon.
Louder! Louder. (C’mon, C’mon…C’mon)
Louder! Louder. (C’mon, C’mon…C’mon)
Louder! (C’mon Track Cut)

Flav:
Hey yo D!
Show ‘em you on the block
Show ‘em you on the block, D!

Chuck D:
I am,
A rock hard trooper,
To the bone, the bone, the bone.
Full grown - consider me - stone!
Once again and,
I say it for you to know.
The troop is always ready.
I yell `Geronimo’.
Your CIA, you see I ain’t kiddin’.
Both King and X they got ridda’ both.
A story untold, true, but unknown.
Professor Griff knows…
“Yo, I ain’t milk toast!”
And..
And not the braggin’ or boastin’ and plus,
It ain’t no secret why they’re tappin’ my phone,
although I can’t keep it a secret,
So I decided to kick it, yo.
And yes it weighs a ton, I’ll say it once again,
I’m called the enemy - I’ll never be a friend,
Of those with closed minds, don’t know I’m rapid,
The way that I rap it,
Is makin’ ‘em tap it, yeah.
Never servin ‘em well, ’cause I’m an un-Tom.
It’s no secret at all.
Cause I’m louder than a bomb.

C’mon, C’mon.
Louder! Louder. (C’mon, C’mon…C’mon) (X6)
Louder! (C’mon Track Cut)

Flav:
That’s right boy
The D is on the block, boy
Don’t forget it!
Kick that shit, D!
(It’s Yours)

Chuck D:
Cold holdin’ the load,
The burden breakin’ the mold.
I ain’t lyin’ denyin’, because they’re checkin’ my code.
Am I buggin’ ’cause they’re buggin’ my phone,
for information,
No tellin’ who’s sellin’ out or power buildin’ the nation so…
Joinin’ the set, the point blank target,
Every brothers inside - so least not, you forget, no.
Takin’ the blame is not a waste,
Here taste,
A bit of the song so you can never be wrong.
Just a bit of advice, ’cause we be payin’ the price,
‘Cause every brother mans life is like swingin’ the dice, right?
Here it is, once again
this is,
The brother to brother,
The Terminator, the cutter.
Goin’ on an’ on - leave alone the grown
Get it straight in ‘88, an’ I’ll troop it to demonstrate
The posse always ready,
98 at 98.
My posse come quick,
because my posse got velocity.
Tappin’ my phone,
Never leave me alone,
I’m even lethal when I’m un-armed.
‘Cause I’m louder than a bomb.

C’mon, C’mon.
Louder! Louder. (C’mon, C’mon…C’mon) (X7)

Flav:
Tell ‘em what happened, D!
Prove ‘em, man
Go and prove ‘em, man
That’s right, go and prove ‘em, D
Show ‘em all what’s hot, D
Yeah.
Haha.
Tell ‘em how loud you is, D
They can’t mess with you, D
Yeah!
(All Right)

Chuck D:
‘Cause the D is for dangerous,
You can come and get some of this.
I teach and speak,
So when its spoke, it’s no joke.
The voice of choice,
The place shakes with bass,
Called one for the treble
The rhythm is the rebel
Here’s a funky rhyme that they’re tappin’ on.
Just thinkin’ I’m breakin’ the beats I’m rappin’ on.
CIA, FBI, all they tell us is lies.
When I say it they get alarmed.
‘Cause I’m louder than a bomb!

The Gospel of Judas

So,
I'm reading about the Gospel of Judas and I'm beginning to think my early church experiences were weirder than I previously thought...
I remember it being mentioned in Sunday School that Judas was supposed to betray Jesus...
that he was playing his part. Now it may have just been a "God's Plan" explanation, and not a "he and Jesus worked it all out in advance" explanation but I don't remember being taught ever that Judas was some kind of satan-inspired monster...
So, was my church secretly some kind of haven for Gnostics?

Daily Kos: Lieberman can't be a "petitioning Democrat"

The pro-war anti-modernity DINO is on the way out...

Daily Kos: Lieberman can't be a "petitioning Democrat":
"Just take a moment to savor what happened today -- Joe Lieberman humiliated himself by admitting that an 18-year incumbent who was the vice-presidential nominee for the party in 2000 doesn't think he can win his own party's primary."

felt the need to grab...

some of that stuff from the old page...
so below this is a brief selective history
of the Hawthorne Improv Collective...

DJ T-Biscuit

DJ T-Biscuit:
"D.J. T-Biscuit

One of the most mysterious figures of the deep DEEP underground Houston rap scene, producer, rapper, and keyboardist D.J. T-Biscuit began as the house D.J. for deep DEEP underground Houston label Jimmy Hat Records, after learning the ropes under the tutelage of Louisiana underground rap legends Jam Master Chuck, MCA, and The Middle Man in the short-lived group MAC in the late 80s. D.J. T-Biscuit first gained recognition recording with forgotten Houston greats Def Dave, Gangsta C and D.J. Swisher in the early-to-mid 90s. After the relative success of the group's single 'With These Hands (My Jimmy's Gettin' Thicka),' D.J. T-Biscuit launched a solo career, releasing his first album Bitches and Food in 1996 in a limited pressing. After the success of the album's single 'Manicotti,' T-Biscuit began work on a new album, Screaming Itches in the Crotch (Makin' Ya Wanna Dance!), which he released the following year.

Though critics panned the album for its 'creative' production techniques (including a backing track of live locusts that ran throughout the entire album's length), the single 'In the Summer' did respectably well, and the album's closing track 'D.J. T-Biscuit Speaks with his Casio' has been cited as influential in HIC member Charlie Naked's usage of cheap analog keyboards, featured on his own album The Magnificent Octopus. Naked actually appeared as one of three saxophone players on Screaming Itches..., while HIC member Charlie Horshack played guitar on several tracks on Bitches and Food. In 1998, Jimmy Hat Records folded, leaving T-Biscuit without a label, and with no way to reissue his two albums, so due to the efforts of Naked and Horshack, HIC Records proudly presents:

Bitches and Food

Two seminal albums combined for the full mid-90s D.J. T-Biscuit experience. All the 'hits' are here... as well as several of T-Biscuit's skillz-flexin' instrumentals, for layin' back, lightin' up,"

Horshack

Horshack:
"The band that essentially introduced Charlie Horshack and Mike Switzer to one another,
Horshack started as a jam band at then-drummer Andre Beskrowni's home in the winter of 1992, playing (and recording) versions of various blues songs ('Stormy Monday,' 'Hoochie Coochie Man') and Neil Young guitar workouts ('Cowgirl in the Sand,' 'Down By the River'), as those comprised the only initial common ground between the disparate members of the group. After some early performances at Zelda's and on the University of Houston campus, resulting in a 'fan base' of primarily dormitory residents, the group went on to perform in various clubs around Houston, including Goats Head Soup, Catal Huyuk, and Epstein's.
The group changed drummers several times, and with Tom Turner as drummer, recorded their one and only opus, Kicking Jim Morrison's Ass, at guitarist Karl Eifrig's residence, next door to Mike's place, a scant block or two away from where the HIC would later take up residence on Lawson street. Horshack broke up shortly after, just as Avijit completed work on their first proto-album Salamander, though Horshack did 'reunite' for two more shows (with local substitute drummer and guitarist): the final University of Houston Perpetual Park Party (for which they were paid a handsome $500), and the party following the wedding of Andrew and Tonya Nicolaou, at which they played so loud everyone went outside."

Horshack is on myspace.

Avijit

in trying to hunt down a little TDU history Tom went searching the internet archive, and found this...

Avijit

You can still grab some mp3's there.
It's nice to see the old site.

The old home page is there
and all the band links work,
and take you to pages with MP3's...

The Carter Administration

The Carter Administration:
"Every Sunday we would have an open jam at the Hawthorne House.
Many people showed up and played;
Ann Panopio, Chris Nine, John Sears, Leroy Bell,
Charlie Naked, Mike Switzer, J.J. Watson,
Ajda Snyder, and others.
This little group became known as The Carter Administration.
We recorded off and on for awhile.
The resulting CD is a memento of great times if not always great music."

We Need Fewer Secrets

A few words from the only decent president in my lifetime:

We Need Fewer Secrets:
"The U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) turns 40 tomorrow, the day we celebrate our independence. But this anniversary will not be a day of celebration for the right to information in our country. Our government leaders have become increasingly obsessed with secrecy. Obstructionist policies and deficient practices have ensured that many important public documents and official actions remain hidden from our view."

Ya know, for a reptile this guy is o.k...

eventaully notsuoh

what are you gonna do when the bomb drops?
when the ax falls?
when you get fucked?
sit around feelin' blue
for yourself now
like you did
like you always do.
my brother likes to yell and fight
until he goes unconscious at the end of the night
but the girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'
girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'

nobody really cares
if you don't go
to the party on Saturday.
you can stay home
if you want to
it's just a party anyway
and when the cops finally
shut us down
we won't care too much
we'll just give up
and watch
the girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'
girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'

I don't mean to put you down
or act like I just don't care
but this isn't the first time
you acted like I wasn't even there

I hear Seattle is nice
but it rains a lot
moving there would just seem wrong
when I came down south this time
I never though that I'd stay for half this long
sure I could be depressed
and I could be sad
but even this damn city
doesn't seem that bad
when the girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'
girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'
girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'
girls go dancin'
the girls go dancin'

- A. Barilla

I'm NOT going to Notsuoh tonight...
gotta lead folks through a rehearsal.
but it's a tough call.

YourGreenDream, Homemade solar, wind and green power diy projects.

I was going to say something snarky about hippies or something, but, actually, this is pretty cool...

YourGreenDream, Homemade solar, wind and green power diy projects.:
"A free source of information on how to create your own homemade projects on solar, hydro, wind, tidal, geothermal or other green power. The site is designed to help and inspire hobby or starters with good easy to understand basic information about solar, wind, hydro electricity generating projects. It also allows you to communicate with others who are doing them same thing so you can avoid making those mistakes others make. And once you have the energy the best ways to use and store that energy, with batteries, electrolysis (hydrogen) and great low consumption products."

New Scientist Technology - Pentagon sets its sights on social networking websites

New Scientist Technology - Pentagon sets its sights on social networking websites:
"The NSA recently changed ARDA's name to the Disruptive Technology Office. The DTO's interest in online social network analysis echoes the Pentagon's controversial post 9/11 Total Information Awareness (TIA) initiative. That programme, designed to collect, track and analyse online data trails, was suspended after a public furore over privacy in 2002. But elements of the TIA were incorporated into the Pentagon's classified programme in the September 2003 Defense Appropriations Act."

Daily Kos: UPDATED: Segregation in a Congregation

Daily Kos: UPDATED: Segregation in a Congregation: "The preacher man suddenly locks his eyes on me and asks 'Why aren't you raising your hand?' as if he's surprised. I reply with 'I'm not saved.' This prompts him to ask 'Are you gonna get saved today?' to which I reply 'Probably not.'

BIG MISTAKE!

He decided to make an example of me, he asked me to come to the front of the room."

The last time I went to church with a friend was high school.
I made the mistake of filling out the guest card...
well, sure enough about a week later, the youth pastor and some other churchy guy shows up at my door, they wanna talk about Jesus and pray with me and stuff...
I don't even like it when my friends show up unannounced, so this was certainly not welcome.
I remember they came in, and we talked for awhile, they left, and I NEVER went back to church again...

TDU SAVES PUPPIES!! AND WE'VE GOT PICTURES!!!

the grooveblog:

"Caught TDU Sunday at Helios as part of the Homeless Pet Placement League benefit. I work with the drummer, Kirk and was vaguely familiar with the trombone player, Mike, and bassist Jeff. They are an experimental jazz outfit that takes you on a meandering sonic journey. Here’s an mp3 of their performance at Helios! I wish more of my photos had come out, but I wasn’t “on” Sunday and most of my pics came out like shit. So, I give you my best images of The Defenestration Unit."

The Best Thing We Have Ever Posted: Reader Tries To Cancel AOL - Consumerist

gotta love bad customer service...

The Best Thing We Have Ever Posted: Reader Tries To Cancel AOL - Consumerist:
"here's the summary: 'Cancel the account. Cancel the account. Cancel the account. CANCEL THE ACCOUNT. CANCEL THE ACCOUNT. CANCEL THE ACCOUNT. FOR GOD'S SAKE JUST CANCEL THE FUCKING ACCOUNT.' "

We're desperate (get used to it)

Ron's right on...
as usual.

REAL ART (and politics and culture):

"While 'experts' continue to offer deficient analysis about this depressing trend, the above noted television explanation being one example, I think the true instigator of American social isolation is right-wing philosophy. That is, for over a quarter of a century, the right wing has pushed every-man-for-himself economic policies, which are now, by and large, the law of the land. Meanwhile, corporations have outsourced the bulk of security providing jobs, and the healthcare crisis rages unabated. The mass-produced corporate popular culture has only reinforced these phenomena, labeling American culture as competitive, asserting that if you're not number one, you're nothing; this is now the conventional wisdom. No really, I'm not making this shit up. Conservative policy and philosophy, now triumphant, have scared the hell out of everyone, making people think that they are utterly on their own. Is it any wonder that people are feeling isolated? "

The American spirit has always been an individualist one, tempered with as much or as little social obligation as the times allowed. I think we'll see a resurgence of people connecting as things get worse. I hope we will anyway, otherwise worse is all we've got to look forward to. The thing is no matter what believe (and I'm fairly solipsistic by nature) we are all in this together. The sooner we realize that and act on it the sooner we kick the reptiles off the planet (literally, figuratively, whatever works for you...). Unemployed now, I sit in front of this computer all day - very disconnected - making rambling posts like this and leaving comments here and there - the connections I make online are really only connections of ideas in my head - not connections to people - phone calls are a step up - text messaging a step down (i think) - but real face to face - that's the good stuff - the apex - and the only way real connections happen - connections based on more than words - and if it weren't for rehearsals, and having a roommate I could easily let days go by without looking at another face.

I do have people I confide in - they are called "drunks" -
(as I do, from time to time, manage to drag myself to the bar)
anyone not sober enough to get away from me after I've had about 4 whiskeys will, sooner or later, know things about me they'd rather not. Does that count?

ZACH SNYDER TO DIRECT WATCHMEN FOR WARNERS - NEWSARAMA

ZACH SNYDER TO DIRECT WATCHMEN FOR WARNERS - NEWSARAMA:
"It’s a story that clearly seems to be a challenge to adapt to film, but now, according to The Hollywood Reproter, that’s what director Zach Snyder’s job is, as the young director was named by Warner Bros. as the helmer of the movie version of the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons classic graphic novel."

In the best of all possible worlds this would be a great movie, and still a poor adaption of the book if it runs any less than 6 or 7 hours...
This is an incredibly rich text, and there is simply no way to do it justice with an American made studio film.
HBO or the Sci-Fi network should be working on the twelve episode series right now...
instead we'll get this...maybe.
It seems like they announce a new director and writer for this project every couple of days...
So there's still hope.
Hope that maybe it will never get made,
and that one of the best comic books
will get to be remembered as a great comic book
and not something else.

oh my god.
I just literally laughed out loud...

dhole: Something that I've been meaning to write for a while.: "Hard as it might be to imagine, the legion of evil outerwear are not necessarily Spiderman's least comprehensible foes. In addition to the special effects guy mentioned earlier, there's the Vulture, whose power, as best as I can recall, is that he's pretty tough for an old guy, John Jameson, who is (and I'm pretty sure I couldn't make this up) an astronaut werewolf, The Walrus, who has the proportional agility of a Walrus (and who is good at crossword puzzles), and, of course, the various Goblins."

The Adventures of London Jim: Paranoid Android:

"So on the Saturday night, I plan my route better, make notes on the journey, and set off. All is well, I don't get lost at all, I'm driving through downtown, heading south for about 1 mile, and end up in the Detroit of 8 mile. I am (literally) on the wrong side of the Union Pacific tracks. The roads are wide but not paved well. The houses are ramshackle and look abandoned. Shouts echo in the distance. And there's the theatre!

So, I parked next to it and enter, where-upon they reassure me that there's a security guard looking after it. The place reminded me of a cross between the Cornerhouse and the Green: it was about the size of the Cornerhouse, but had the structural integrity of the Green. Odd, considering they boasted of their 'semi-professional' status (i.e. they had part-time staff and actors etc. received stipends, and they had a nice web page!)."

Star Trek New Voyages

thanks Ron (have we figured out an emoticon for sarcasm yet...)

Star Trek New Voyages: "A. Our ultimate goal is to produce a full year's worth (22 or more) web episodes per year maintaining Gene Roddenberry's philosophy and vision for the original 1960’s television show. We believe in challenging people’s thoughts and enticing them to action. We feel that Star Trek is a great vehicle for exploring the human condition. We plan to devote the series to commenting on the current condition of life on Earth in the 21st century."

Now instead of looking for a job, or working on "The Adding Machine" I'm going to be watching new Star Trek episodes...
I can't help myself.
I'm weak.

jwz - it's liquid human meat!

Via Misc. Heathen:

jwz - it's liquid human meat!:
"The milk used so far is reported to have come from six peasant women who were still breast-feeding their children. No details have been given on how much they were paid or how much milk was used.

'When the customers are having the human milk banquet, they can experience maternal love at the same time.'"

this is a little creepy, yes?

NEWSARAMA.COM: WARREN ELLIS ON DESOLATION JONES

I can not wait to read this arc:

NEWSARAMA.COM: WARREN ELLIS ON DESOLATION JONES: "I mean, Philip Dick's life alone is going to be a very seductive kind of story for Jones. As a man for whom time has essentially stopped, Dick's notion that bedrock time is in fact AD 50 and everything that we believe has happened since is a counterfeit reality is kind of interesting. As a man who's discovering, at the end of Made In England, that he's still subject to the machinations of wheels within wheels and secret masters even in LA, the idea that perhaps there are massive satellites somehow floating just out of sight above California shooting information-rich pink lasers into people's heads and generally Knowing Things They Shouldn't must seem kind of apt.

Philip Dick has fascinated me since my teenage years. I believe he is the essential visionary of at least the last half of the 20th Century; the condition of the early 21C Western world is in large part the Philip K Dick condition."

I loved "Made in England" - Ellis has a new artist for arc 2 - and well, you know how I feel about Philip K. Dick, right?
RIGHT?

REAL ART (and politics and culture)

REAL ART (and politics and culture):
"...ending slavery was likely the most moral action ever undertaken by our nation. Juneteenth should be celebrated by all Americans; the holiday represents our collective desire for truth and justice--in that respect, Juneteenth is as American as the Fourth of July."

He's right you know.
We should all celebrate Juneteenth, MLK Day, May Day, Gay Pride (remember Stonewall) and any other day that celebrates or commemorates an advance in the liberation, liberty and respect for and of any and all peoples...
These days are true humanist holidays - not based on religion or statism, but the advancement of the human condition.
These are the days that really make a difference.

Even if they don't mean that I get candy.

We can keep Easter as long as we make
it about Spring and rebirth and fertility...
and I still get candy.

At least they have a cool logo...

TPMmuckraker June 16, 2006 02:36 PM: "But it discontinued some programs, most notably a multimillion-dollar effort to build privacy-protection technologies. ARDA also abandoned the effort to build audit trails in TIA, which would have permanently recorded any abuse by users."

Really.
I'd wear it on a T-shirt.

bartender's blues

Well I'm just a bartender
And I don't like my work
But I don't mind the money at all
I've seen lots of sad faces
And lots of bad cases
Of folks with their backs to the wall

But I got four walls around me, to hold my life
To keep me from going astray
And a honky tonk angel, to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away

Well I can light up your smokes
I can laugh at your jokes
I can watch you fall down on your knees
I can close down this bar
Oh and gas up my car
And I can pack up and mail in my keys

But I got four walls around me, to hold my life
To keep me from going astray
And a honky tonk angel, to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away

Now the smoke fills the air
Of this honky tonk bar
And I'm thinkin' bout where I'd rather be
But I burned all my bridges
And I sunk all my ships
And I'm standing at the edge of the sea

But I got four walls around me, to hold my life
To keep me from going astray
And a honky tonk angel, to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away

Anti-Realism in the Theatre

Anti-Realism in the Theatre:
"Probably the setting exercises the strongest influence in expressionism. The tendency is to minimize the setting until it shall indicate only the absolute essentials of form and feature. The desire of the expressionistic playwright to objectify as tellingly as possible complex psychological states, particularly of an abnormal sort, has driven him to utilize stage devices, akin in their super-rationality to the devices of romantic staging, but dependent on the elaborate mechanical resources of the modern theatre for realization."

Production aspects of Expressionist theatre (from theatre) -- Encyclopdia Britannica

Production aspects of Expressionist theatre (from theatre) -- Encyclopdia Britannica:
"The Expressionist stage neither simulated reality nor suggested unreality. It existed in its own right as the platform from which direct statements could be made. Settings therefore tended to be abstract or, when specific, highly subjective. Techniques of distortion and incongruous juxtaposition expressed either the ideological position of the director or dramatist or the state of mind of the protagonist, or both. In Expressionist plays the walls of houses might lean at sharp angles, threatening to crush the protagonist; windows might light up like eyes spying on the secret and intimate; trees might take on the shape of the skeleton signifying Death. In this way, instead of simply forming the milieu for the action, the setting became a dramatic force. "

Jazz Styles: Modern Jazz: Expressionism

I guess I've been an expressionist all along...

Jazz Styles: Modern Jazz: Expressionism:
"Another style of music popularly included under the 'free jazz' umbrella that has roots in more traditional forms is one I will call expressionism. This style is based more on modal jazz than on bebop, often employing a very simple head and single key center to serve as a springboard for improvisation. Musicians in this style of jazz are usually concerned with expressing their selves as fully as possible, and the music is a means to this end. Expressionists often tend to play very long solos, and indeed it is not atypical to find an entire album or concert set consisting of one composition.

This style of jazz is noted for its intensity, and it is indeed sometimes known as 'energy music'. It is worth noting that many expressionists are highly spiritual people, and their music is often likened to 'speaking in tongues'. Soloists often exploit screams and other vocal effects and extended techniques, as opposed to the more linear improvisations of freebop. As in freebop, they rarely limit themselves to playing any specified harmonies, although the theme-solos-theme form of arrangement is usually still followed, if only loosely."

This describes TDU to a T.

or do I go running and yelling
through the streets?

Daily Kos: Nuclear Lessons: The Sanity Clause

Daily Kos: Nuclear Lessons: The Sanity Clause:
"To these I add the assertion that nuclear war was averted without either a coercive or cooperative world government or authority, largely because of a shared sense that however rational scientists, political and military leaders pretend it is, nuclear war is insane. We know they are all Dr. Strangelove. We need to remind ourselves of that. "

The Adding Machine

had our first read through Sat - went fairly well, although I was short some folks...

we haven't even started rehearsals proper and I've learned a lot...
like how personal some people take casting, when it is anything but,
and how hard it is to organize a damned calendar when you've never lived by one,
and how much talking through a show clarifies it,
and that I don't think I'll ever be able to cut a script...

This is such a learning project for me -
I'm thankful for the folks who've signed on...
The clearer the show gets in my head,
the more I hear the voices,
the more I think we're gonna
end up with a helluva show...

Right now I'm pretty upset...
a friend of mine is upset that she
didn't get the call to be in the show...
there were/are so many talented
amazing friends of mine who didn't get that call
but there doesn't seem to be anything I can tell her
to make things even close to right...

all I can do is
grovel
and
wait.

I think it is.
